I have created Desktop and Netbook USBs and CDs, both of which boot satisfactorily from "modern" machines. However...

My target machine is a 10 year-old Dell Lattitude, (1 gig pentium III cpu, 2 gigs memory, 120 g Harddrive, satisfactorily running XP SP3) which is set to boot first from external devices, which it will do from a CD but not a USB. It boots OK from CD into DOS, Windows, and a universal repair CD, which is based on some other species of Linux.

However, regardless of which Ubuntu I try to use in the CD drive, I get a little bit of initial action, some flashing of the keyboard equation, and a few flashes of Ubuntu and the little red lites, then everything stops. I have to turn off the machine to restart. I have tried the Wubi install from both USB and CD, so I get the dual boot choice presented at startup, but the same brief flashing and freezing occurs.

What can I try to get this thing to work with Ubuntu?

Thanks in advance to all who may help.

I have no idea... it is a 10 year old laptop.
