I have been using dimscreen, a very small app that decreases the brightness of my windows monitor using keyboard shortcuts. Dimscreen under wine disables my mouse pointer.

My migration to linux is always hindered by my extremely bright ubuntu screen. Even though I tried to decrease the brightness using the buttons on the monitor(it is set at 0 now), decreasing the gamma using xgamma, flux, redshift etc nothing seems to lower the brightness low enough for comfortable viewing. The command xbacklight doesn't work.

What used to work until I upgraded to ubuntu unity was compiz configuration to set window brightness of window type = normal to around 80. But it is painful to notice that modern versions of ubuntu may not support compiz anymore and I don't want to get stuck to an old version just for the sake of my brightness control. I've searched google for weeks with no positive results.

Any inputs?
