Hi,

Looking to replace my laptop (HP6910p) with maybe a T520 (Lenovo).

Need:

Suspend/Hibernate to work

external VGA to work

docking station

fast graphics

about $1500

Any suggests?

Looks good, at least with the 'special image', so it must be possible.

Is it possible to "turn-off" the optimus switching in a Lenovo t520 and have the machine ALWAYS use the nVIDIA discrete graphics?

Basically (as far as I'm aware), it's only possibly if there is a BIOS switch/toggle.

Apparently, you can:

Cool.

Oh, you can switch manually, but it restarts X: http://www.netbooknews.com/5133/linux-ubuntu-gets-gpu-switching/

And here for the Launchpad Group: https://launchpad.net/~hybrid-graphics-linux

So, for right now - you can use just the discrete IFF the BIOS has a toggle and soon (hopefully) this will be reverse engineered.

Cool; T520 is now a viable option for Ubuntu.

Perhaps the laptop future isn't quite so bleak. :)
