Is there any way I can switch my desktop shell from unity to, say, gnome-shell? I can switch using other console shell I like (bash, csh, fish, etc.). Assume that there is a stable alternative desktop shell, I should be able to choose, too.

(For console shell, we goes to /etc/passwd. But for desktop, I can't find the way to config.)

You can select if from the login screen. There's a "Session" option at the bottom of the screen after you've selected a user (but before typing in the password).

Notice, though, that you can't run Unity and Gnome Shell installed on the same system, because they depend on different versions of Gnome. Still, there are a wide variety of desktop environments to choose from, and most won't conflict with one another.
