Ubuntu 10.10 will not install

SO I just decided to switch operating systems from windows to ubuntu. I burnt the disc and everything works but when i use wubi or even boot from the disc it takes 5 hours of showing me the waiting cursor and the wallpaper...then it says unrecoverable error, please reboot. I really want to switch to linux, this is discouraging and annoying. I run a 5 yr old compaq laptop. 1.5ghz CPU, 256mb RAM, idk what's up :S. I need help with this...

Hi, welcome to the fora.

With 256 MB you can not run Ubuntu, but Lubuntu is a good choice.

i had 9.10 running on my system before but i decided to uninstall it. As far as I know 256mb is the minimum system requirements is it not?

No. As I said above, you can not run an Ubuntu desktop on 256. You can run a server installation, but I doubt that this is what you are aiming for.

Yeah, just about anything is possible, just not advisable.
The minimum recommended requirements for Ubuntu is 1GB of RAM.

Of course we know that a few people run it on 512MB of RAM, but with 256MB,
you'd be much better off with Xubuntu or Lubuntu, mentioned and linked to on the above link.

If you still choose to go with Ubuntu, and you're reasonably successful, please provide some info for others trying to do the same thing.

Besides Lubuntu, which is an excellent option, you can install Ubuntu using the Ubuntu Minimal CD Image. Then add a basic window manager to get a graphical desktop. See this: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal
If you plan on using that computer for a while it would be worthwhile to upgrade the memory to at least 1GB if you can. You would get much better performance for a relatively small investment.
