View Full Version : [ubuntu] How do I use a downloaded login theme on Ubuntu 10.10

I am very new at Ubuntu, I only recently changed over from windows cause my computer was infested with a bagillion viruses. I have been trying to customize all my displays and I found a bunch of theme's for my login screen at the gnome web page, but i cant figure out how to implement them. It took me long enough to figure out how to change my desktop, but it seems there is no easy way to change the login screen. I got Ubuntu tweak, but that only allows you to change the background and the button, I was hoping to find a way to use the ones downloaded from the web. Does anyone know hpow to easily apply a gnome theme to your ubuntu login screen/boot menu? Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to UF

I may not know how to do what you're asking, but if anyone is going to, they'll probably need to know exactly what you're downloading and trying to install.

I found it on GNOME-look.org. The URL for the theme is http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Windoze+Professional?content=53906... i'm trying to make the login like like XP's login screen.

At the time that theme was created in 2007 there was an application that made changing the login screen pretty easy from what I have read. That application is no longer available in 10.10 . If you search the web you will find various instructions for changing the login screen . I have not tried any of them , so I can't tell you how well they work. Good Luck

Ubuntu login screen is not very modable. I tried that once, and it was pretty much impossible. You can install Ubuntu Tweaks to change the background, but that is pretty much it.

That, the distributor logo, and the style of the login box and panel (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1726016).

Why would they change it? from what I gathered the old system was great.

I don't know for sure why the change , I guessing incompatibility or conflict of some type with other software and the developers had to make a choice.

The application has been brought back for 10.04 as the GDM2 set up available via the PPA. Sorry , 10.10 + not included .

You can't apply the GDM themes on gnome-look.org to Ubuntu 10.10, but you can apply any standard theme to change the theme to match any standard Ubuntu theme that you have installed in the /usr/share/themes directory.

The instructions in there will allow you to modify the login theme the same way as an account's theme. Just keep the icon theme as loginicons, or you will break the login screen.
