How about the Sex Pistols? They pretty much put punk on the map. The Ramones are also classic punk(ish).

Not a fan of punk rock but I would say Iggy Pop is pretty good.

I love classic rock. The Beatles are my favorite band, and Zeppelin is right up there also. Other than those two, there's just too many to list.

Ding ding ding ding! Though they did start doing a lot of reggae/ska jams by the time Sandinista was released (Ghetto Defender FTW!).

The Ramones are also classic punk(ish).
Punkish? They were the founding fathers... "Hey ho, let's go!". Other first-wave punk acts were The Damned, Patti Smith Group, early Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Slits and X-Ray Specs. Velvet Underground needs big props too.

The above and others like Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Queen, Moody Blues, Bob Marley, Dire Straits, Police and many more.
Let's not forget The Who... Tommy and Quadrophenia were both groundbreaking.

There are too many second-wave punk bands to list (special mention goes to Black Flag), but see the Wikipedia entry for a good primer...

Velvet Underground were just so hugely influential. Though they are considered experimental, their name is all over the Wikipedia page on Punk Rock. Famous Brain Eno quote...“Only five thousand people ever bought a Velvet Underground album, but every single one of them started a band.”

Some not purely Punk but related stuff you might want to check

RX Bandits - sort of hardcore-punk-ska-prog

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - ska-core

And three great Irish-Punk bands

The Pogues
Flogging Molly
Dropkick Murphys

And..........

The King Blues.......

....... don't really know what they are.........

For some reason I never considered the Velvet Underground to be punk. I have lots of their stuff, but it seems more fringe rock than punk.

Not going to mention what others have, punk has a great foundation. I prefer "first generation" but while somebody mentioned Iggy Pop, I would like to add "soldier" as an album. Maybe not strictly punk, but I think if you listen to punk you will like this album.

Iggy pop is either all on or all off: Either completely terrible or incredibly good. Soldier is incredibly good.

They're not, as they were around 10 years before "punk" came out, though they do have some later tracks that are definitely punk. They're considered experimental rock or art rock. They were part of that whole Ramones/CBGBs scene though, and they influenced EVERYBODY.

Yes, exactly!

They are one of the very few groups I know who celebrated music for music's sake, not for trendiness or sales. They did what they did for the sake of expression, and it became popular after that.
