View Full Version : Intel Quad Core 2 doesn't throttle below 2.0 GHz

I have an Intel Quad-Core system that works fine, but is often underutilized (0% CPU utilization). I have all four cores set to "ondemand", but they only seem to switch between 2.0 and 2.5 GHz.

I have read all the threads I can find on this topic, but they don't cover what may affect the minimum speed a CPU can operate.

Is there a (safe) way to add lower settings to the system to throttle the CPU down lower when unused? I believe under Windows, the CPU would cut down to half or less.

Or does this not gain me anything? Aside from power consumption, I'm particularly interested in heat output when the system is not in use. It will be summer soon, I'm in Los Angeles, I don't have air conditioning.. well, you get the picture.
