Well I've tried dozens of Linux distros and in the wait for Hoary 5.04 I'd like to try something else but I don't have a clue what exists besides Windows and Linux...Any suggestions? Someone has a link to a list?
Thanks

FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD: BSD UNIX operating systems. Will remind you of gentoo. Not for the faint of heart, though. I've barely figured out how to deal with one of these baddies.

GNU/Hurd: Still in development, but the GNU OS of the future.

Other than that, really nothing else is _PRACTICAL_.

Don't forget OS/X, although I never use it.

Ditto.
Also, look at Sun Solaris.

There's also SkyOS, BeOSMax (among many BeOS "distributions" if you can call them that). Definitely check out Solaris, though their install procedure is quite long for some reason. All the BSD's are worth playing with as well.

Heh, I should think that would be stretching it a bit...

Hey, it IS an OS ;) It's a beast, and though it's quite difficult to get installed and functioning, it gets MUCH harder afterwards ;)

Thanks for all the answers! I've checked out the links also and they were really informative...I've put up a photo "collage" of Zeta, Syllable, QNX, RiscOS, BeOSmax, SkyOS, and Mockup OS here http://www.freewebs.com/mazzzinga/ so anyone may have a look!
Of all I liked Mockup the most and immediately downloaded and burned the .iso but unfortunately couldn't even launch X...:( Now I'm downloading BeOSmax and..we'll see!

PS: I didn't bother to look at *BSD's because I know they are "cousins" of Linux and the experience would be more or less the same...

I had noticed Mockup somewhere else (???) earlier. Pity it didn't boot into a desktop, but I agree, it does look (to me) like the most encouraging of the lot.

The picture on the mockup website is actually a mockup. The GUI won't look like this and be functional for a long time. And it's basically a linux distro. With new graphical software but a linux distro.

greets, tim

The first 4 and the last one are good for us people of the single persuasion. Unfortunately, I still like my computer(s)...<g>

It is the other way around, the BSDs are a direct desendent of Unix, and Linux is a clone. Just wanted to point that out, not to start a BSD vs. Linux argument.

What can you run on i386 other than Microsoft OS or Unix-type OS?

Hello! Just installed BeOS MAX replacing Ubuntu (it's only temporary ;)) and .... it rocks!!!!! It boots into desktop in 5secs (I'm not kidding!) and already has firefox 0.8(old..), mp3 support, vlc, flashplayer, blender and lots of apps! If you download an app such as I did with Descent (it's an old game) it has graphical installation and installs at /boot/apps/descent and automatically adds itself to the menu! I think I'l stick with BeOS for at least a week or even until Hoary...:p Here is a screenshot http://www.freewebs.com/mazzzinga/screen1.tga

Yes! but it appears there's a BeOS version for it also...Actually you'll be surprised with how many apps and games there are at www.bebits.com

PS: After this I'll try a *BSD, but I'm confused with OpenBSD vs FreeBSD vs NetBSD...Can anyone help me out with this?

ReacTOS - www.reactos.com

Efforts to try and improve the windows operating system. Still in its very early stages but it runs, and runs a fair few applications.

I can't wait until ReactOS is done. If they get it working properly it might replace Linux on my future computer.
