Hi all, I am a complete n00b to any non-Windows OS. My laptop install hangs up after clicking "forward" on the install welcome screen for selecting a language (English obviously). After 8 hours looking through the forums I have verified the download with md5sum, burned 2 cd's and 1 dvd at low speed, and checked each for defects. I also attempted the installation 6 times, eventually ticking off all the parameters like "nomodeset" etc.

There don't appear to be any hardware conflicts with the laptop (a very old HP Omnibook XE3). There is nothing on the hard drive, as I wiped it with a program called DBAN to erase a stable and functioning copy of XP just prior to this.

Sorry if I was too wordy. Thanks.

Does it run choosing Try Ubuntu?

You may need to create a partition map. You can do this from the LiveCD/LiveUSB.

Please boot from the Ubuntu LiveCD/LiveUSB, select 'TRY':

Menu to: System >> Administration >> Gparted Partition Editor:

Then you can retry the install.

It does load the "Try" session, and I did go to the GParted Editor and follow the instructions you provided, yet I still get the same exact problem. Perhaps an older version may work, I don't know. Any advice is appreciated.
