Blind soul needs help with talking book downloads from BARD (Library of Congress) website.

I can download the books to my computer, but, can't transfer from there to the digital cartridge so I can listen to them on my player.

Messages sometimes say: Archive: /media/mickiebook/DB-Asimov's Science Fiction (March 2011).zip
[/media/mickiebook/DB-Asimov's Science Fiction (March 2011).zip]
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /media/mickiebook/DB-Asimov's Science Fiction (March 2011).zip or
/media/mickiebook/DB-Asimov's Science Fiction (March 2011).zip.zip, and cannot find /media/mickiebook/DB-Asimov's Science Fiction (March 2011).zip.ZIP, period.

OR

There was an error creating the folder "DB-Larsson, Stieg-The G...Hornet-s Nest-DB71400(2)".
Error creating directory: No space left on device

I have cleared everything off of the cartridge.

I have created a folder to hold the books and have been able to get some books onto my cartridge using the folder a couple of times, but, it just won't work now.

The instructions are found here:

http://www.sos.mo.gov/wolfner/BARDinstructions.asp

I created a folder as instructed and then made a file within it with the books title.

Help, Please?

hi,

I'm not sure I understand the question, having had little experience with assistive technology.

can you give the make and model of the player, and link some technical details about the cartrige you speak of? what is the mickiebook?

is this something i could go to any old local library and play with, so i can attempt to replicate your experience hands-on and troubleshoot further? (IE: Do I have to actually be blind in order to learn-by-doing to help?)

looking at the windows xp directions (http://www.sos.mo.gov/wolfner/BARDinstructions.asp).

notice that she says to move the files inside the .zip to the device, not the .zip file itself.

it looks like you should be moving the files extracted from the .zip to the device, not the .zip file itself.

also:

I have cleared everything off of the cartridge.

after deleting things, did you then empty the trash?

space is not actually freed up until you 'empty trash'. all "deleting" something in Ubuntu actually does is move it to a folder on the device called ".Trash". Emptying the trash is when the actual deleting & freeing up space occurs.

(It is the same on Windows and OS X, btw. Windows has a hidden folder called "recycled" instead of one called ".Trash"...)

You need to unzip the book and transfer it into the top level directory or the root directory of the cartridge. I have this service as well. What you have to do is right click the book in the zipped archive and right click where it says extract. It should extract in a folder of the same file name as the zip file. This is the folder that you put on the root or top directory of the cartridge. Hope this helps.
