i hope this is the right category, but any way here goes:

i partitioned my 1TB iomega ego external harddrive to a 150GB and a 850GB...im using the 850GB for backups and the 150GB i want to install ubuntu on, when i go to install i select the partition and then when i click foward i get this message: "No root file system is defined.

Please correct this from the partitioning menu."

idk how to correct that and i need some help. Thanks!!!!

In the dropdown box on that page marked Mountpoint click on the / entry, which is "root". That should do it.

Go back and click the drop down box and select the little "/" sign, which means "root".

Edit: LOL, he waited an entire hour & you beat me to it by seconds ajgreeny :D

The least I can do is include a pic to help make my post useful...lol.

If you want some examples of the entire process. Herman's is very detailed both explanation & screenshots. aysiu's on separate /home is less complex.
