View Full Version : Favorite "Hacker" movies?

Ive seen most of the common ones, and im currently watching the girl with the dragon tattoo series (dunno what its called but im gonna watch the third one soon)

But my favorite would be "Hackers" in all its cheesy glory. We've all heard the arguments against it, such as the GUIs not being possible at the time, and how unrealistic the hacking was. But I think it got some things right, such as the attitude of the hacker, which is someone who loves to learn and explore. I think this key element is often overlooked in hacker movies.

Anyway, what are some of your favorites, and what are your opinions on some of the movies?

"WarGames" ^.^d
That was about the only one that I know of that actually had any real hacking.

After that, I'd have to say "Takedown".
Didn't really show a lot of hacks, but showed the importance of "social engineering".

The only one that I've bothered with so far for my personal collection is War Games, partly because it's the only one I recall actually paying to see.

Most of these have already been mentioned but my favorites:

The Matrix (1999)
The Social Network (2010)
WarGames (1983)
Sneakers (1992)
Brainstorm (1983)
Swordfish (2001)

Now Brainstorm is definitely worth a rental if you've never seen it. Christopher Walken and Natalie Wood (in her last film appearance). Perhaps more cyberpunk than hacking.

Wiki says... Eventually released on a small number of screens and with little publicity (despite being trumpeted unofficially as "Natalie Wood's last movie"), Brainstorm was well received critically — Janet Maslin of the New York Times gave particular credit to Louise Fletcher's "superb performance" — but was a failure at the box office: the $18 million movie only brought in $10 million in ticket sales.

Holy teenage wasteland, Batman! Nobody mentioned Tron?!!!? (1982)

I haven't seen Legacy yet.

Honorable mentions (not strictly hacker movies, but close enough)...
- Enemy of the State
- The Lawnmower Man

Honestly I loved the movie Hackers, which though was about as non-realistic as possible they dropped some very nice true-to-life phrases like referring to NYNEX, some of the books they mention, and even the character named Emmanuel Goldstein who's named for the 2600 Magazine Editor and also a character from the book 1984. I can watch this movie SO many times... great music, great plot, Angelina Jolie :-D

Also on my list of faves are War Games, Tron, Antitrust, The Social Network, Pirates of Silicon Valley, and I will put The Matrix in there though I agree with whoever said there is no true sequel. Takedown is good though it's pretty much entirely false in relation to the true Mitnick story, but it's worth seeing none the less.

Other more documentary type shows you guys might like are Revolution OS (obviously), BBS Documentary, Freedom Downtime, Triumph of the Nerds and Nerds 2.0.1 (both from PBS) and Nova episode KGB, The Computer, and Me (also PBS). I think all of these can be streamed through Youtube or other places.

The Cuckoo's Egg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cuckoo's_Egg_(book))

Requires you to pick up a book and read it. It's a true story and way better than any movie.

Besides that I enjoyed WarGames back in the day.
Track Down was also interesting but inaccurate.

Yes, I own four copies of it, one being a first edition hardback signed by the man Cliff Stoll himself and I keep a paperback copy permanently in my collection of books on my desk (http://twitpic.com/4i1zou) for those days when I just need to get away.

You can tell from the spine of my paperback copy, which I bought new in 1990, that it's been well read. I actually make it a point to re-read the book every couple of years because it's just that awesome. I give this book much credit for getting me into computers and for my love of Unix and now Linux. When I first read it I was maybe 14 and hugely into BBSes, so learning about networks outside Fidonet was amazing!

I do highly recommend this book to anyone, and the Nova documentary is dang good to. Cliff Stoll is a great speaker and you can also see him on an older episode of Computer Chronicles (check Archive.org) and I really enjoy his speech at TED.

Oh, and the recipe for chocolate chip cookies in the book is one of the best I've seen. It's worth picking-up just for that :)

Take care --

Sam

Hackers for the win, simply because tho the matrix was kewl. It wasn't really about "hacking so much. The Net had more hacking in it then the Matrix did.

I'll have to check out some of the movies listed here, but just cause the movie has computers in it don't mean it's about hacking persay.

So again, Hackers,.. Oh and Social network in the opening scene when he hacks the Harvard school network while he was drunk. that was fun to watch. Not to mention the "interview" session when they all had to do shots whilw hacking into a database, lol.

Sneakers, all the way. The themes about governments, technology, and freedom only get more relevant as time goes by. This scene with Ben Kingsley (http://youtu.be/oKprr3tEBew) sums it up nicely. I actually picked up a copy of the Sneakers novelization at a secondhand bookstore in Indonesia. Great stuff, and provided a little more detail on each character's backstory.

I also agree about The Cuckoo's Egg. Loved that book. Had no idea about the Nova TV episode and Cliff Stoll being on TED. Gotta look those up.

Will keep an eye out for the Nova documentary, was not aware of it.

It really is a great book and an excellent read.

As for the chocolate chip cookies I'm gonna go OT here and post it.

Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe

Two eggs, 1 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup regular sugar, 2 sticks softened butter. Fold in 2 1/4 cups flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and a couple tablespoons of vanilla.
For an extra chocolate jag, toss in 3 tablespoons of cocoa.
Oh, don't forget 2 cups of chocolate chips. Bake 'em at 375 degrees for 10 minutes.

By Clifford Stoll, from The Cuckoo's Egg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cuckoo's_Egg_(book))

Going to try this recipe today. You americans really love your sugar, seems very sweet.

Would the flour in that recipe be cake or bread flower, I assume cake flower?

Anyway go out and get the book for those that have not read it!

For the folks looking for the Cliff Stoll videos, here ya go:

Nova episode KGB, The Computer, and Me (Entire episode) from 1991
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcKxaq1FTac

Computer Chronicles episode from 1991 about Network Security with interview with Cliff Stoll:
http://www.archive.org/details/networksecur

Interview with him on C-SPAN in 1996 talking about Silicon Snake Oil, which is another one of his great books (he only has three):
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-666540182028461233#

Stoll on Politically Incorrect from 1997:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nG2-WDoFdjg

His speech at TED from 2006:
http://www.ted.com/talks/clifford_stoll_on_everything.html

Interview with him on Tech Icons from 2009:
Ep #1 - http://techchannel.att.com/play-video.cfm/2009/6/22/Tech-Icons:-Cliff-Stoll
Ep #2 - http://techchannel.att.com/play-video.cfm/2009/7/6/Tech-Icons:-Cliff-Stoll1
Ep #3 - http://techchannel.att.com/play-video.cfm/2009/7/13/Tech-Icons:-Cliff-Stoll11

What's cool is several videos are filmed in Stoll's house in Berkeley and you can see the same fireplace and some of the same furniture and pictures in each video.

He was also great on MSNBC The Site, but I've never seen any clips from there with him.

I like Hackers, even with the stoopid special effects (film directors seem to believe that just shooting scenes of people typing at a computer will be boring - but a good director can make a shot of someone lighting a cigarette into something sexy and dramatic, so an exciting laptop should be easy without resorting to ridiculous Tron-style cyberspace nonsense).

Incidentally, what is that weapon that the Angelina Jolie character fires at the rent-a-cop when they're out trashing? Is it just a flare gun, or something more ingenious? Recently I saw some stuff about how to make a pistol that fires Estes rocket motors - that'd be a cool item to own, in jurisdictions where such items are legal, of course.

The third one is called 'The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest'. I watched the first and second ones a few weeks ago and I've got the third on the way. I'm big fan.
Also love Wargames. It's one my favourite films from when I was a kid. I'm probably in a very small minority but I was really disappointed with The Matrix. I didn't think it was that good. :(
