So now that gnome 3 has released, is there a way to use gnome-shell in Ubuntu 10.10? Do I need to still compile gnome-shell, or is there now a package that I can use to install the latest one?

From what I heard from OMG! Ubuntu comments, Gnome Shell won't be hitting 10.10 Maverick. However, I wouldn't be surprised if an unofficial back port is made.

That's what I thought... thanks!

You can add the PPA and install it

I am running it right now. It is pretty sweet but there are a few annoyances I need to track down but so far I like it much better than Unity.
