Nvidia Screen Resolution on LCD TV

I recently posted this problem in "Absolute Beginner Talk" but to no avail, maybe I'll have more luck here!

I am a complete beginner with Ubuntu. I'm trying to connect my desktop PC to a 32inch LCD TV. I'm using a Geforce 8600 GTS card with the latest driver. I have the TV connected to a PC input. When I play videos full screen on the TV it is clear that the resolution is wrong. Videos that normally reached to the edge of the screen have black bands at the top and bottom. This is using the auto resolution of 1024x768. I checked in my TV manual and it says it has 1366x768 Native Resolution. When I change to this in the nvidia settings, it is way to big, and alot of the display is off screen. I tried to fix it using the "overscan" slider, but it does not help.

I never had this problems when i used windows. I assume I was using a different resolution (maybe 1200x720?), which is not available in the nvida settings. Is there any way to add a custom resolution?

Any help GREATLY appreciated!

Try going to the x server display configuration, changing the configuration for your tv to twinview and position to absolute or clone.

No, still no joy. Right now the TV's connected with a VGA cable. If I change it to HDMI will I get more resolutions?

If the VGA -PC input worked okay with windows then it should be possible to make it work now.
Some TVs work better with singlelink-DVI-D/HDMI connection because their VGA modes are a subset of the HDMI ones & DVI/HDMI allows CVT-RB timing.

Have you disabled overscan on the TV ? some TVs will only do this for some inputs..

Try using separate X screens setting & not twinview.
Twinview forces a meta-mode that includes both monitors/screens & forces the same refresh rate..

Post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log as an attachment.

OK If this problem is not fixed tonight i'll go and buy a HDMI cable tomorrow. I tried using separate x screens but its still the same. I have thoroughly checked all my TV menus and there is nothing about overscan! There are some scale options in the picture menu, at the moment it is set as "full".

Your log file shows that CRT-1 (wired port) has no valid EDID so the driver makes a guess.
You can try to fix or find a work-around..

You could use a monitor section & a specified mode & possibly a custom modeline entry..
(The custom modeline should not be necessary but...)
I would use separate X screens & not twinview just to make it easier to get working..
I prefer separate screens for full screen video playback.

There was a lot of EDID problems a few months back & the nvidia driver version or xorg/kernel all could have been the cause..

The nvidia driver you are using was not a very good release.
The x-swat ppa has nvidia driver 270 pre-compiled packages for easy consumption.

Post your TV model specifics if you want a monitor section or to try a custom modeline calculated (or use CVT)..

All these problems may evaporate with a $5 singlelink DVI-D to HDMI (19pin) cable..

So the DVI-D to HDMI cable fixed the problem completely. My TV model now appears in the nvidia settings and a has a huge list of screen resolutions to choose from. Thanks for the help!
