no windows in desktop

Hello a few days ago i found a video on youtube on the perfect ubuntu desktop 10.10 i could only complete it about half way when i had to turn of my computer but when i turned it back on whenever i open a program there is no window around the program. also my mouse is a cross can some one please tell me how to return to default. I will add the link to the video soon.

Borderless Windows sometimes happen due to compiz problems.
press Alt+f2 and type
compiz --replace
Hope it solves your problem, as it works for me in these times.
