Ubuntu Server became slow !!

Hi all
I installed Ubuntu server 10.04 in a normal PC(Dual Core, 1 GB RAM).
It was working fine. When I loaded Desktop over it (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)
it became damn slow. Finally I formatted and installed Server only. What may be the reason?

It is hard to say now that we don't have the machine for testing. My guess is that it is simply Gnome being heavy.

If you want a desktop environment, try LXDE / Lubuntu next time for comparison.

Actually my intention is to have multiple terminals. I use 'screen' for this purpose. But the output of one screen becomes visible in other screen. Even if I redirect it to a file and put '&' in the last, still the output comes to screen. That is very annoying.
I am using 'Kannel' for sending SMS. It needs to dedicated terminals. 1-Bearerbox, 2-smsbox
Another terminal is required for my day-today work.
How to do this? Please suggest.
