Hi friends,

I am new to "ubuntu"..

Can someone provide me installation steps with screen-shots if possible ?

And please suggest me which version is best to install for long term , without any issues.

Thanks
Kiran

Best is to try a live boot first to see how each version works on your hardware.

For long term support, 10.04 is the one to choose.

10.04 LTS. Here's an installation guide:

https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/installation-guide/index.html

You would want the first selection (i386) for a 32bit machine and the second for 64bit (modern dual-core processors). As mentioned, download the appropriate ISO, burn a CD, boot from it and 'Try Ubuntu' to see how your hardware goes. Report back with any problems. If all is looking good install 10.04 LTS.

Welcome and good luck. ;)

Hi Morgas / Bucky Ball,

Thanks alot for you're help here , and thanks for the docs.

Friends told me that Ubuntu was user friendly , and it works great , so though a second and decided to install and work , but afraid though i was completely new to this OS.

But now i'm feeling happy , that i have someone like you guys to walk through the issues incase , thanks once again.

One of my friend installed Ubuntu 10.10 version on my laptop , and I started working.. not sure what happened all of a sudden after 1 week I couldn't get login screen , so unable to login :(

I don't have any reason why/what happened exactly.. very disappointed.

Then I observed from Ubuntu web site that 10.4 was best for long term use , so planned to re-install with older version , and this time planned to do it of myself so that i can can learn something..

I'll try to follow you're steps on how to install Ubuntu 10.4 , and get back here incase if i can come across any issues.

Thanks once again..

thanks
kiran

Good luck. Boot from the CD and see if it runs from that first. You probably won't get wireless working that way, but that is fine. You can sort that once you have installed to hard drive.

Good idea installing yourself. Enjoy the learning curve. ;)

ps: Yes, 10.04 LTS has an earlier release date but it is the current LTS (long term support) release so in that sense it is the latest. 10.10 is the current rolling release (in that case most recent) and soon 11.04 will be the current rolling release.

Of course, if you wanted the absolute latest, bleeding edge release you would go for the nightly builds but I wouldn't advise that yet! :)

Hi Bucky,

Do you want me to try installing 10.10 version , or better go for 10.4 only so that no issue blow up , or still 10.10 also works great ?

Which one you would suggest me ?

Thanks
Kiran

10.04 LTS definitely. Support until 2013. More stable than rolling releases. Smoother ride for a newcomer though you might want to try some newer ones when you know the ropes a little.

Once you've downloaded the ISO, burn a CD, boot from the CD (you will need to get into the BIOS when you start the computer to change the boot order), and choose 'Try Ubuntu Live' (or something like that it is) from the options you are presented with. If all is looking good, go ahead and install.

Go the 10.04 LTS Desktop version, 64bit (AMD64) if you have a 64bit machine.

Any problems, post back.

This site is for 10.10 & should be the same for 10.04.

If you're installing 10.10 & dual booting, do not select "install side by side".

Hi All ,

Before i try re-installing Ubuntu 10.4 , - I just want to tell you one thing regarding the issue/error that I'm facing with current Ubuntu10.10 installed version..

( Though I have already had Ubuntu 10.10 version installed on my laptop , and instead of re-installing thought a second of telling you guys about my error/issue. If this is known issue , and already addressed.. i may get prompt resolution , and start enjoying the experience of 10.10 version.. )

I was not able to get the login screen , and instead thrown by an error like

ERROR :
intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled

Let me know if you need any further information from me..
Thanks for all you're help here..

Thanks
Kiran

This is a different issue from the title of your post and for more help on it I would post another thread with an appropriate title. ;)

Kiran, as an alternative to the live installation CD's and the newest version of ubuntu, consider Wubi as a flavor to try. That way you can run it along side windows without having the troubles associated with running dual boot systems etc.

Thanks Canime..

Was this Wubi similar to Ubuntu ?

Actually i'm new to UNIX , so just want to work-around.. so as friends suggested me to go with Ubuntu which would be friendly in nature..

Let me know if this Wubi also works great , and doesn't come up with any issues while installation and further more , then i will go with this..

thanks

No, they are unrelated, whereas Ubuntu runs exactly as a native system to your system, Wubi will run hand in hand with Windows. The natural thing to try, is try all of them and see which one's you like. Mostly however the term Unix and Linux are synonymous and most technical folks will interchange the two without loss of meaning. Wubi is very different.

It works with windows7 too.

You may find this site helpful also...

It's important that you realize this is not a true dual boot. Ubuntu will be dependant on windows, if windows goes down it will take Ubuntu with it. I'ts meant to try Ubuntu & any problems you're having, I believe you'll have with wubi also.

Thanks for the information, I wasn't sure because I loaded all that onto an XP machine, and I run Windows 7 now...

Wubi is for trying Ubuntu. It is not a permanent solution. If you like it, install 10.04 LTS to your hard drive (as I said in the beginning) - dual-boot with Win7 if you like.

Wubi is slower than a hard drive install and can be problematic.

Hi All,

Last week I was able to install Ubuntu 10.4LTS successfully on my laptop, fine and thanks for all ur help here!

But I’m over coming with one wired issue ,

Issue –
1. Opened “terminal” , and installed a software called JBoss ,fine.
2. And able to work fine without any problem on one terminal , fine.
3. Just thought of opening another new terminal , and clicked .

,

Now plays interesting part and wired one was –
the already running terminal disappears , and even unable to open any other new terminals.

So i cant open/use any more terminals

Then after spending some time came to know what’s the issue -

“execute” permissions were deleting for /bin directory So anything accessible via /bin will NOT be accessible any more.

This is happening only after installing JBoss , so there’s something going on after installing JBoss which making to delete execute permissions.

Do we have anything which making this happen ? any idea?

Do we have any place where we can check , or how this happening ?
Do we have any fix for this ?

How am i confirming tht only happening with JBoss installation means –

I tried uninstalling JBoss , and able to open “n” number of terminals without any issues.

Please let me know if anything was un-clear , i’ll explain once again..
Please help me here , because of this i am unable to practice what i want here.

Thanks
Kiran
