I'm looking for a piece of software that is easier to use than basic gimp. i like gimpshop but it's no longer in active development. is there anything similar? i don't like piracy and $600 is just way too much for photoshop imo

I dont understand, you want something more complex or something more simple ...?

Photoshop on OSX is like the Gimp interface.

Pinta (http://pinta-project.com/) is a simpler graphics paint .....

Gimp is the best in my opinion though , once you get used to it ....... look for all the add-ons and scripts
you can make it into whatever you want ..... or download the latest development release (https://launchpad.net/%7Ematthaeus123/+archive/mrw-gimp-svn) to try it in single window mode ......
