hey guys,
any1 want to help explain how to create a dual-boot (vista-ubuntu).
i have vista on internal HD, and want ubuntu on external HD.
last time i did this, i lost the ability to load vista, something to do with the grub overwriting the MBC.
all help/advice welcome :)

Unplug the internal hard drive before installing. There's not much of a chance of messing it up then. ;)

+1 on Dutch70's suggestion of unplugging drive.

If you cannot do that or do not want to, you have to use manual install so you get the combo box and which drive to install the grub boot loader into. Otherwise it will install to the internal. That is fixable if done wrong but not necessary.

Lots of detail:
Installing Ubuntu in Hard Disk Two (or more) internal or external
