I installed ubuntu 10.04 on my father's pc today. Unfortunately I'm not at his house right now so I do not have all the specifics but here's the situation: After the installation was completed it gave the following message "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you many investigate the problem or try installing again". It also said gnome desktop was not able to install. I'm pretty sure he does not have enough memory, so I will add some ram to his pc. My question is once I add ram, can I install gnome desktop without completely reinstalling 10.04? If so, how do I do that. If not how do I completely reinstall 10.04? I pretty new to ubuntu so sorry if I did not provide enough info.

Hi and welcome to UF,

It would help if you provided the specs on the pc. Also, are you dual booting with windows or using Ubuntu only?

I would just do a fresh install, since it's fairly simple & fast.

Just boot up the live cd/usb, select "Try Ubuntu" to make sure it's going run on your hardware. You can also browse the web while installing from there.

If you're not dual booting with windows, just select "use entire disk" when you get to that option.

Tip: You cannot have upper case letters in your username.
