The Pirate Bay wins auction site


BREAKING NEWS

In a bid on Auction site eBay, for the site of eBay.com itself, Pirate Bay (TPB) has come out as the official winner.

We saw that eBay was up for sale on their own site and since we have a long going law suit against them for abuse of our trademark name "pirat(ebay)", we wanted to be pragmatic and just use our immense profits to buy them. This will hopefully make us spend less time with the lawsuit.

TPB will use the tools from eBay to make a better rating system for torrents. Then TPB will divide eBay up into smaller companies and sell to the highest bidders. We see no use for an auction site since most stuff is available for free.

eBay.com will in the future be redirected to thepiratebay.org, and hopefully this will put TPB into the top 5 internet sites today.

Linux kernel to be released under BSD licence

The Linux kernel will soon be released under the BSD licence, kernel creator Linus Benedict Torvalds said today.

Asked for a reaction, Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said he would have to closely examine the statements attributed to Torvalds. "This Linux thing was like a cancer all these years and it is difficult to see it metamorphosing overnight into something that might save our company," he said.

Oracle head Larry Ellison declined an offer to comment. However, sounds of glee could be heard over the telephone before he replaced the receiver.

Google chief executive Larry Page, who is new to the role, said: "Gee, we never do any evil so it doesn't make any difference to us."



Novell chief executive Ron Hovsepian hailed the announcement as the "dawning of a new morning."

The only note of disapproval came from Free Software Foundation chief Richard Matthew Stallman. "This Linux Foundation and other bodies tasked with promoting GNU/Linux are always indulging in publicity stunts. A few years back, some organisation recruited Paris Hilton in a bid to promote the kernel. This is just another cunning stunt," Stallman said.

Debian, Arch, OpenSuse, Gentoo, and Grml to merge


We are pleased to announce the birth of the Canterbury distribution. Canterbury is a merge of the efforts of the community distributions formerly known as Arch Linux, Debian, Gentoo, Grml and openSUSE to produce a really unified effort and be able to stand up in a combined effort against proprietary operating systems, to show off that the Free Software community is actually able to work together for a common goal instead of creating more diversity.

Canterbury will be as technologically simple as Arch, as stable as Debian, malleable as Gentoo, have a solid Live framework as Grml, and be as open minded as openSUSE.

Joining the Canterbury Project Arch Linux developer Pierre Schmitz explained: "Arch Linux has always been about keeping its technology as simple as possible. Combining efforts into one single distribution will dramatically reduce complexity for developers, users and of course upstream projects. Canterbury will be the next evolutionary step of Linux distributions."

Gerfried Fuchs, who gave a talk about Debian at last year's openSUSE conference, said: "While DEX (Debian Derivatives Exchange) might have been a good idea in principle, its point of view is too limited. We need to reach out further for true success."

Robin H. Johnson, lead of the Gentoo Infrastructure team, in a panel of core Gentoo developers at SCALE9x: "I really hate compiling-induced downtime. I've been looking forward to installing packages with just a couple of keystrokes. By building on the efforts of other successful distributions, we can take the drudgery out of system maintenance."

Michael Prokop, founder of the Grml live CD, can be quoted on the effort that "we managed to create a universal live build framework with grml-live. Our vision was always that it will be universally usable to further the spreading of Free Software."

Last year's openSUSE conference had the topic of "Collaboration Across Borders". Klaas Freitag, a respected member of the community, mentioned that "the conference motto was set intentional and actually this is what I had in mind as a positive outcome for the conference."

Stefano Zacchiroli, Debian Project Leader, comments on the Canterbury distribution: "during the last year, Debian has worked a lot on the topic of collaboration with other distributions. Some initiatives have been targeted to Debian Derivatives Distribution (e.g. the Derivatives Front Desk, DEX, etc.), but we have also been happy to participate in conferences and panels with other distributions such as openSUSE and Fedora. We are proud of our recent work on collaboration and we are now ready, with Canterbury, to push these initiatives to the next, natural, step: uniting together in the next generation community distribution. Canterbury shall live long and prosper."

I love the fact that the various projects collaborated on the merger prank. Very good natured.

Yeah, a very well put together prank. I fell for it for a little bit. This always happens to me on March 31, because it's still March and I'm not thinking about it, then I see something fishy and eventually realize that it's not still March everywhere :P Every year there's one that I really remember because it was that good, this is one of them.

Also: UbuntuForums changed all the staff username colors to white this year. Topic index within a sub/forum will still show them as black though, hardcoded there (IE: Last Post By, thread starter, etc.)

Arch Hurd Netbook Remix:


After much discussion, we, the Arch Hurd developers, feel that, due to the success of Arch Hurd, a remix focussed on netbook users is in the best interests of our community. We reviewed the typical usage of netbooks today and feel that despite our lack of wireless, sound and SATA (amongst other things) the superior design of the Hurd is worth the small hindrance that some of our users may experience.

A graphical LiveCD, featuring GNOME 3.14-1, will be released shortly.
