I've been playing with this desktop for a couple of days.

Compiz (http://www.compiz.org/) standalone as the DE
Compiz-boxmenu (http://sourceforge.net/projects/compizboxmenu/) for the right-click menu (allows the use of pipe menus). I also have the menu binded to ctrl-space to bring it up when the desktop is full, and the menu also launches from the orange ubuntu icon on the dock.
AWN dock (http://wiki.awn-project.org/) on the bottom and left.
Multiple instances of conky (http://conky.sourceforge.net/) running...still need to add an album art script to the bottom one displaying MPD info.
Wallpaper is one of the defaults in 10.10.

Running Ubuntu 10.10, same as last month but just had a hardware upgrade (Dell E6510). Everything looks the same, just some minor changes:

Clean desktop (http://users.skynet.be/bk244928/clean.png) with elementary wallpaper, comixcursors mouse pointer theme, gnome colors icons (gnome-brave), screenlets (ClockRing replaced with CircleClock, eigenCal) and avant window navigator (moved the panel to the left side because of the higher screen resolution on the E6510).

Home folder (http://users.skynet.be/bk244928/home_folder.png) with custom emerald theme.

Gnome Do (http://users.skynet.be/bk244928/gnome_do.png) with customized theme.

This is what Gnome-Shell + Unity would look like. A nice tablet interface I made in Ubuntu 11.04 Classic Session on my Viewpad 10, the panel on the left auto-hides but leaves a 12px gap so I can press my finger on it. Need to find a way to centre that **** applet properly along the top panel though.

I've kept the theme dark so that it doesn't dazzle me or anyone else around me in lecture theatres when the lights are turned off. Now just need to find a suitable theme to replace Ambiance. Any suggestions?

I love the look of RGBA Murrine + Emerald themes that understate the borders and such - they're so very subtle. You've also coordinated you color scheme very nicely.

How did you do that? That's not just an ordinary Gnome Panel with changes in gconf, is it?

Yeah I just opened up gconf-editor and navigated to:

apps>panel>toplevels> Then select the panel and make sure auto hide is checked. Then in the auto_hide_size field enter in the number of pixels you want to leave showing.

Copper Bezel
April 2nd, 2011, 08:42 PM
He's asking about the menu bars in the applications, not the panels (which are both, BTW, provided by Avant Window Navigator, Testing version.)

I ran Gnome Panel, added the Appmenu indicator applet to it, then used Compiz to move the Panel to the Widget layer. I have the Widget Layer accessible via a right-click on the top screen edge, in the odd case that I really need the menu bar.

Colours probably need a little more fine-tuning, but I'm kinda liking the overall blandness.

And since my laptop is currently without power as I wait for a new A/C adapter to arrive, here I am once again with... Windows XP :|

Mine.

I'm using Gnomenu with a modified button (it was originally green), and KDE type menu (it was solid and white, but I made it transparent and blue)
Using Cairo-Dock with a white Mac OSX background
Emerald Theme: I forget, but it looks green-blue when it's in focus
Using Compiz also.
Gnome panel background: My own custom image
I made the wallpaper. I have three others and making two more today.
I'm using the elementary revised icons and a mouse pointer by the name of candyman (it's animated)

I'm loving the Twilight Sparkle BG. I'd think it was a screencap or maybe a vector trace, but she's more SD than usual - your own art?

Plan on putting up the set anywhere when you're finished? I'm assuming that if you're doing six, that's one per pony?

(Damn. I'm thinking that if you do put them up, I'll start using a 3X2 desktop layout. I'm using Compiz wallpaper, and it would be terribly fun to have one workspace for each. = )

It's a Gnome Panel applet called "Weather Report" you can add. It's available in all distros that support Gnome.

I'm working on #5 of the set, and I'll have #6 done by tonight. I'll release the full versions when I'm done on Megaupload and as a special treat for Linux users I'm setting them up with an xml file so they can cycle through.

I was actually planning on putting each one on a different side of the cube lol. Here's a preview, I'm working on Rarity now.

I basically assemble them by using brushes in gimp, screencaps (which is a PITA to clean up the edges), and background images from google as well as random little images like of the cupcakes. After I'm done I run them through a filter I have to give them that vibrant glow.

Heya Bibo,

Ok , I haven't been big on cartoons in a long time, but I just watched the first 2 minutes of it, and I dig the whole 'light vs. dark" and the 'finding harmony' thing, So I guess there are probably some good universal lessons in here, So I will go ahead and watch the rest. lol

I just remember when I was a little kid, and my sister would always play with her my little pony 'dolls', and sit and brush their hair and talk to them and make them smell nice..

Probably why I see it as soo 'girly'.

I think I even remember some of her little ponies coming "scented" with their own fun fruity smells....
or was that her "strawberry shortcake" doll?

lol, I dunno.. I'll give it a watch though.

and i must say..
Nice work on those walls!
as "girly" and elementary as they feel to me..
They are still really niice!

(I'd model the icons, as I use a couple of them for the user account icons on my machine, but it's a bit difficult to get a screenshot in GDM. = P ) The download includes icon archives for Mac and Windows and .pngs that can be used in Linux.

I will admit I had the same feeling you did, and then I started watching it one weekend when i was bored. I've been hooked on it ever since.

Oh yeah give it until the 4th episode before you make your final decision, apparently there was going to be an actual storyline, but it got nixed at the second episode, but it never stopped the show from being superb.

Also, thanks for the feedback! What's awesome is I'm making these using nothing but Gimp.

elif [ "$sel" == "Select area" ]; then
scrot -s %T.png -e 'mv $f ~/Desktop'; notify-send "Screenshot done"

This is pretty basic. I tried Cairo Dock for a while but I didn't feel as productive - each time the mouse pointer went to the bottom of a window I was working on, the icons from the dock would jump up in the air into my work. After a while I found it rather annoying - very cool looking, but annoying.

So I am back to basic panels with quick launch icons - it works for me. :)

On KDE. GNOME and Openbox for laters.

Icon Theme: Faenza KDE (somehow the Oxygen-KDE engine screwed up Docky's icons, ignore them)

Wallpaper: Just a darker edit of a grayscale Lotus Esprit wallpaper I found somewhere, just Google it; heh.

Themes: A ragtag mix-and-match of colors and themes I have for Plasma + default Kwin.

I got fed up with the NetworkManager bundle (for KDE and GNOME), so I ditched them and picked up Wicd instead. Same goes with the GNOME and KDE's default Bluetooth manager, I went for BlueMan instead.

I've considered doing this, too, for some of the Compiz tweaks (not "effects") I'm running on mine. I'm assuming you didn't watch the video, though - in his case, though, a still wouldn't quite get the point across (even for his desktop background alone.)

Copper Bezel

Very, but it's a branch, not a fork. The changes will eventually be rolled into the stable version. Trunk includes a new style, multiple-panel support, and a Notification Area.

You only need a single disc (disc 1) in any of the collections (and optimially a working wired connection) to install. If you have only offline I recommend you download or purchase a DVD image.

The installer is not hard at all. It has a few more steps but it is very obvious how to do everything. Try it in virtualbox first.

If you decide to install it, and need help, start a thread in other os talk and link me to it.

For the sexy style Rasa1111 is using, you'll need to install it as avant-window-navigator-trunk from the Testing PPA (https://launchpad.net/~awn-testing/+archive/ppa).

The testing version also supports multiple panels. You can put it on the top and bottom. = ) (I use a Unity-style layout with indicators in the upper right and the dock on the center-left.)

Edit: I suppose, since I'm here, = )

Debian Stable is a well tested release that only recieves bug fixes and security updates. Testing and Unstable are software that are being tested for the next stable release of Debian. Since they eventually are supposed to be released, it is a happy side effect that Testing/Unstable are day-to-day usable.

Software has to fit certainly requirements in order to move from Unstable to Testing, such as having no release critical bugs and remaining in unstable for 10 days.

I know, but I'd expect xfce 4.8 to make it to testing sooner (or 4.6 for that matter which wasn't in testing 4 months ago iirc). Of course I don't expect stable to upgrade anything now till the next release.

@koleo, Xfce 4.6 has been in stable for ages and is what I'm running. 4.8 is already in experimental...
http://packages.debian.org/experimental/xfce4
I tried 4.8 on a Live CD of Fedora 15 alpha. It's a very nice release, but the only major changes (that I can see) are that panel transparency is handled better and of course the rewrite of Thunar. I solved the few frustrations I have with Thunar in 4.6 (no tabs, no icons on folders, no eject button for removable drives and CDs not showing at all) by installing Nautilus and running it with --no-desktop. Remote drives isn't an issue for me. It's only noticeably slower than Thunar the first time I open it, and that's only by about a second.

Nothing fancy. Xubuntu 10.04, default theme (Alatross), and I moved some things around on the panels.

Wall paper is called "circuits," and can be found here (http://simpledesktops.com/).

Nice, dark and simple. :)

Gnome 3.0 on ubuntu natty.

Ive used unity for a while but i must say that im impressed by gnome 3 when you compared it to earlier .0 versions of gnome, once plugins and customizability have matured more it will be a nice desktop environment for day to day use.

It is the Gnome Shell based on Mutter, not Compiz:

It looks great in the preview, but up close, the "You Are Our Lucky Winner" banner is a little tacky. = )

Don't you have this?
Yes, although not for audio CDs, of course. The new Thunar, and Nautilus forever, have the nice little added touch of an eject icon next to the drive icon, and they both show an icon for audio CDs.

I'm using a fresh Daily build of Natty. How do I test out GNOME 3? What's the exact process I do? I don't want to mess anything up.

That question would be better posed in the natty-development forum. But here is the short answer: make a second install and use in that one the gnome3 ppa https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/gnome3
This ppa is considered quite unstable and will most likely break Unity among other stuff. Therefore the second installation ;)

Yeah I was reading that on webupd8.

I was almost ready to install it and check it out...
until I read comments from a few people who completely borked their systems. lol

I don't mind borking stuff..
But figured it best if I waited a little bit. lol :P

You should use a monospaced font in your terminal.

Are all the colors shadings and mixes of @bg @base etc colors?

Solid advice.

Thanks.

I almost used this wallpaper (http://static.simpledesktops.com/desktops/2011/02/09/Abduction.png) instead. Kind of funny, while staying with the dark theme.

As much as I'm sure there's a reason for this, it doesn't really apply to most users. I use the Ubuntu font, personally. Literally only becomes a problem in vnstat, the only terminal app I use that requires tabulation.

Are all the colors shadings and mixes of @bg @base etc colors?

Pretty much, except metacity is a pain and doesn't allow you to pull directly the @bg_color but rather takes colors like bg[NORMAL], base[ACTIVE], fg[SELECTED] etc. So what I've had to do is link in the gtk the @base_color (which A-New-Hope takes toolbar colors from) with text[ACTIVE] (it's redefined later in the gtk). This way the color will change with the toolbar and menu to remain integrated; however, it makes it incompatible with other themes. So I guess I'll also include a version which has a fixed color (most likely to match Ambiance).
