Some combination of possibly: kernel upgrades + compiz + transmission + screen saver has my acer aspire laptop going down. It got progressively worse and worse and with the 3rd kernel upgrade (I see 3 in grub) the laptop could go only an hour or so before becoming unusable.

I removed compiz, replaced transmission with deluge and went with a lighter screen saver. (I use a 52" Plasma TV as a monitor and I am concerned abut image burn so I did not disable the screen saver).

Anyhow, with deluge, an ant walking around screen saver and no compiz the laptop is again fine. I ran it all night downloading torrents with a screen saver activated and this morning it came back no problem.

Unless someone can tell me how to fix this combination of software, I will trial and error the available screensavers, and reinstall compiz again in a couple of months.

I will then update.
