My initial installation is for 10.4 (desktop). I've configured the package manager with my proxy information under the network tab. Downloads are attempted but none are successful. example error:

Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 400 Bad Request

I can download the example above via the firefox browser on the same machine configured with the same proxy.

I've reviewed other posts on this subject, but no helps. I've tried changing servers, other hacks, but no change in results. I suspect its a proxy issue, but I don't see how. I did provide the credentials in the http authentication window that my reverse proxy requires.

when I try to change servers, I get this message: No suitable download server was found

Well, it turned out to be my proxy settings after all. The synaptic package manager requires the actual proxy name and port...not an automatic configuration script url that contains that information in it like you can enter in the network proxy preferences
