Unity 2D no applications in launcher

I have a Toshiba satellite running Maverick x86-64, with no 3d acceleration so I've installed Unity 2d. While the desktop comes up fine and I can open firefox and several other apps from the launcher I cannot access any applications from the Application launcher. Nothing happens when I click on it and I can't see any other way to launch apps not in the launcher bar. I would like to get this sorted out before Natty is released so upgrading won't be an issue.

Any ideas?
