install 10.04 with ati v7700

I'm getting stuck without video trying to install 10.04.2 on my workstation with a ATI fireGL v7700. I believe there used to be a safe video mode option on the LiveCD but it is now not there. DO I need to download the Alt CD? I've never used it before.

The alternate cd fails to install as well. The video just conks out while around the time I select partitons, and then the cd spins down. I can't even get to a live boot to run an lspci to give more info.
