I have been using Ubuntu exclusively for several years now. I don't use Windows at all. Today I got a pop up message saying that updates for 9.04 are not going to be supported anymore, so I thought I better look into upgrading. I'm not against upgrading, I just love the simplicity and look of 9.04 and I'm used to it. I know I will need to do a fresh install, but should I use 10.04 or 10.10? Also, I don't like how the windows look in the newer versions with the close/minimize buttons being reversed. If I upgrade to the newest version, can that be changed to look like my current version? One final question, is there an application available to backup all of my preferences and applications I'm currently using which reinstalls them in the new version? Thanks in advance for any advice.

It is all described here:

10.04 LTS is supported until April 2013
10.10 is supported until April 2012

You might want to look here for other differences.

I just updated my computer from 9.04 to 10.04 yesterday. It's wasn't as bad as I thought. I had problems with FlashPlugin crashing in Firefox. I finally got it fixed by installing and gett to run properly the add-on called Flash Aid. In order to get it to run the script properly, I had to add myself in the TTY group.

I noticed, and was irritated by the the close/minimize buttons being on the left side of the window. Selecting another theme and then going back "fixed" it. I should have a look at the link provided in the earlier post.

But, the upgrade worked without much trouble! So I'm happy; and looking forward to 11.04.

Good Luck!
