Something I haven't been able to figure out yet are the symbols shown at the bottom of the first screen after booting a LiveCD.
These symbols can be seen at the bottom of the picture shown here (http://mylinuxramblings.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/snapshot11.jpeg?w=600).
What are they? Especially the symbol on the left...

The one on the right means accessibility perhaps? All I know about that is this is the prompt that shows when you "push any key" to get the CD menu.

I have two theories
its an math equation in ancienct egyptian algebra, resulting in the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything. its supposed to be a keyboard and tells the user than it can interrupt the boot process by pressing a key aslong as the symbol is displayed

I kinda figured it was a "press a key" type prompt, but the graphics aren't very clear and a tad abstract....

:lolflag: For all of it's obscurity, it might as well be...

Warning: Using a keyboard with no visible keys will result in a magical aura appearing around you.

I always call them the little man and the keyboard.

The first icon (keyboard one) lets you select your keyboard layout.
The second icon (accessibility) lets you select accessibility options (eg, on-screen keyboard, screen magnifier, etc) if you need them.

The official slogan of Ubuntu is: Operating System for Human Beings.

I think the left symbol represents a keyboard (i.e. a computer) and the right one is a human (taken from a theme from Leonardo da Vinci drawing:

In the middle you have an equal sign.

I am not sure if those have any other functions.

The human is definitely the accessibility symbol. I'm not sure if the keyboard is something separate (layout?) or if the equals sign means that you hit something on the keyboard to activate accessibility features.

This is probably the most likely answer.

Probably. :)
