View Full Version : [ubuntu] Ubuntu10.10 and Win VISTA: Win does not boot ...

Hello,

I just installed Ubuntu10.10 64bit on a DELL Inspiron Laptop dualboot with Windows VISTA. May be I did a bit too much: I resized the Win partition (wit Ubuntu Installation tools) and Win was not shut down but in sleep mode.

Now in grub I can choose between Ubuntu, memtest and "Windows Recovery Environment" - first time Win came up fine (continued the session). After I shut windows down, it does not boot correctly (shutdown after half way Win boot).

Thank you for any advice!

Here is my boot Info script output:

Your first mistake was re-sizing a Vista partition with a Linux tool. Vista doesn't like that.
I don't even know how you managed to install Ubuntu while Vista was sleeping, as you need to boot from a cd or usb.
I would imagine that a chkdsk needs to be run on the Vista system, but I'm not sure it will allow it.
If you have a Vista/7 installation disc or a Vista repair disc (not a recovery dvd) you can run the command prompt from the recovery environment and type in
chkdsk C: /r but I suspect it may not allow access.

If you don't have a recovery disk, you can download the ISO for VISTA (http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/) or WINDOWS7 (http://neosmart.net/blog/2009/windows-7-system-repair-discs/)

This same thing is happening to me with Win7 instead. Coming a from a clean, formated install of both Win7, then ubuntu. About 3/4 of the time, windows fails to load and restarts halfway through. :/ Haven't found a solution yet.

Try scheduling a chkdsk and see if that helps. Keep scheduling it until, no errors are reported.
