I just installed 10.04, it boots fine and gets to the desktop. I can navigate with my keyboard fine. but when i move the mouse around. after a few minutes the screen goes black leaving just the cursor. I can move the cursor around the black screen. then the screen resets like i did an auto adjust on the monitor and the black screen with the cursor comes back up. once again I can move the mouse. Then It "refreshes" again. Stays in this loop until I restart it. But nothing changes. I have re-installed twice.

Hi, welcome to the fora.
Which screen card do you have?
Have you tried installing 10.10?

its on an older HP desktop. Integrated Pentium 4 processor. 512mb of ram.
I tried 10.10 but could never get it to install right. It would boot to a terminal looking screen like a bios, but never a desktop screen like 10.04 does

What matters most is which screen card you have. Anyway, you could try boot options:

I'm pretty sure he means graphics card. To get your exact card, you can run the following command in a terminal and post the output back here.
Highlight the info & click the # in the toolbar to put it between code tags.
Post the output or...

Alternatively you may want to try Xubuntu. It will run much better with 512MB of RAM.

Here is a new update. I have re-installed yet again. But this time I was able to do anything I want. Including using the mouse. I ran the updater, restarted and everything. This time whenever I make a window full screen is when it black screens. Also once I was searching google and when I clicked a link it black screened. I will get the card info tomorrow. I dont have access to it right now. But i thought that this may change something in your thought processes. thanks for all the help so far!

Yes, screen card or graphics card. English is not my mother tongue...
I still believe that adding boot options is worth trying. A full memory test is also a good idea.
If you want something faster than a regular Ubuntu, you should try Lubuntu. Xubuntu is not much lighter.
