is there a difference between burning an image and burning everything inside that image after extracting it?

Yes, there is a big difference, especially in the case of a boot cd/dvd. If you want to burn an .iso image for installing Ubuntu, you cannot extract it first and then burn it, as the data you burn in that case is no longer bootable. If you burn the .iso directly to the disc, it creates a bootable disc that you can use to install or run a live version of Linux on your computer.

Not to mention that compressed archives in many cases take up less room than non-compressed, so if you want to fit a lot of data in not so much space, compress it first.

Yes, in windows it is called piracy. In linux it is called custom build/distro. :D
