Hello everyone!

I recently decided to install linux on my old laptop which had basically given up on life. its an old toshiba m200. It requires an external dvd, and the only one I had available in the house doesn't work. Instead I dug out an external cd drive and used an old 6.06 live cd.

Suffice to say, 6.06 installed without a hitch and is running smoothly currently updating. I was however wondering if its possible (due to my lack of dvd drive) to update all the way to the current version (which I believe is 10.10) without downloading a .iso of the release (which I believe is too big to put onto a cd)

I'm also wondering if my laptop has high enough specs.

1.5ghz Intel Centrino processor
1.5gb ram
32mb nvidia video card
60gb 7200rpm hard drive

Thanks in advance.

Edward

Hi, welcome to the fora.

Such a long chain of upgrades is error-prone (in order not to use a harder word). Just burn 10.04 or 10.10 on a CD, try a live boot and install - that's all. Just remember to have wired internet access while installing.

The .iso is made, so it fits to a CD.

ahh, thank you very much. I didn't know that 10.10 could fit onto a cd.

Just so you know, you can also use a usb stick aka flash/thumb drive.
It runs faster than a cd & imho, it's easier to create.

If you have one available, 1GB will work, even thought the website says 2GB min. Not sure why it says that.

To create it, you can use the Universal USB installer Here (http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download) ...Go to step 2, tick "usb" & "show me how"
Or you can use Unetbootin...Here (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/)

This is not the newest of computers, so I doubt that it can boot from USB. Anyway, it does not harm trying.

Ahh, I see. Thought maybe it would help since the OP is using an external cd drive. I always try to promote the use of a usb stick whenever possible.

Because most of the cd's end up in a landfill somewhere instead of in a display machine at office depot like they should be. :P

You can certainly upgrade from 6.06 to 10.10 if you like, instructions are here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes

However I think it will be faster and less error-prone to do a fresh install of the current release, rather than a multi-step upgrade.

Ubuntu system requirements are here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

correct. my computer does not support USB booting, sadly.

I'm having the freezing "install ubuntu" issue now. hopefully I can fix that.

Thanks for your help once again!

'Freezing' can be many things. What exactly are you seeing, and when does it happen?
