Hi...

Still in 8.04 hardy heron,
ordinary upgrade via automatic upgrade
does not work, some essential pieces missing,
but also my bios does not support usb cd
and my "original" cd drive is broken.

So........
I have burnt a cd Ubuntu 10.04
Lucid Lynx
desktop version
32 bit (intel).

1) I have broken cd drive and old bios,
i have usb cd drive instead
which is not supported by bios
when boot from cd.

2) I have still Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron
but if i upgrade to 10.04 from there
via automatic upgrade, this does not work,
some patches missing, whatever, but
upgrade this way does not work
and in the end the system is set
back to 8.04 again...

3) I have burnt a cd with entire
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx
which i had downloaded from the web
at ubuntu com;
within my 8.04 i want to install all of it,
so i want to install 10.04 this way,
so a fresh installation
via my usb cd (this is also the way
i had burnt this cd image; the cd
shows all the files so it is the right
way burnt), so just not via bios boot,
or how to explain this best.

3) when i first opened the cd,
i got a nice window wherein i could
see all the 10.04 files plus
a pop out window that was about
package manager, so that is why
i typed in my password
yet do not know
what that exactly did as i cannot find
the 10.04 distribution
and if i try the cd anew,
the cd with the 10.04 content,
this pop out window, or whatever it
can be called, is no more appearing,
only the window wherein are all the
files for 10.04 but no idea how to
install from there all at once;
this whatever to name "pop out window"
gave some synaptic and i possibly
had to click "apply" which i had not done,
instead i had clicked away this
window because i wanted to do so
at a later time; after that it no
more appeared, also not after rebooting
and again inserting my cd via usb drive
(this way of cd so is not possible via my bios version, the original cd drive is
however completely broken and is why
i have a usb cd drive instead).

My question: how can i install from cd in my situation all of 10.04?
As i gave my password, there must be
something already installed or perhaps
it only meant synaptic was appearing
(but not returning).

(If i type in xterm
lsb_release -a i still see i am in
8.04 :

lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS
Release: 8.04
Codename: hardy )

How can i access my 10.04
in my situation?
How can i install my 10.04
in my situation?

Please only reply if you really know
and i hope to receive solution
very very soon;
also i hope i have expressed
my situation well enough.:KS

I admit, I didn't read all of it, but I did see the part about not being able to boot from your optical drives (internal or USB). Have you tried unetbootin?

If you want help here, you need to be more patient (three posts all in a row is not polite ...) and not criticize folks for offering suggestions.

If your PC allows booting from USB, since your optical drive is broken, the solution of creating a USB bootable version is the one you should try.

If your PC can not boot from USB, then you will need to replace the CD drive.

Ubuntu can't fix hardware problems, nor can it bypass BIOS limitations.

Thank you thank you thank you
everyone...

It occurred to me,
in my situation (which is that i cannot boot from the cd)
i may check source list
and try to change some there.
alter resources.

This may take me a while
and then see if that works.

Then, after that, possibly use apt-get.
