View Full Version : Where to find linux laptops???

Hey,

I might be in the market for a laptop but I can't find a dealer anywhere in Finland that would sell linux laptops. Heck, I even can't find a dealer which would sell laptops without Windows pre-installed.

So what are my options? Is there a European company that would ship decent linux or whitebox laptops at a reasonable price? Could I build my own laptop?

Thanks

I don't know about Finland, but here's on in Germany:

http://www.system76.com/ will ship outside the US, but not for free.

Wow, those prices are extremely high for laptops with free software on them. Jesus.

Edit: (Refering to system76.com prices)

Thanks aysiu,

The german store had, in my opinion, unreasonable prices. I think I'll contact system76 to ask about their shipping prices. I don't think it's going to be a viable alternative, though.

I'm in Belgium and looking for a new laptop too. I've asked about a custom built laptop from here:

But no reply yet.

Wow, those prices are extremely high for laptops with free software on them. Jesus. Companies like Dell, who sell Windows preinstalled in bulk also tend to get hardware discounts, so, yes, you generally pay a little more for Linux computers.

Edit: (Refering to system76.com prices) Again, generally this is the case, but the Koala seems reasonably priced, and you're not likely to find too many 12" laptops for under $900 with Windows XP on them.

Are you sure a custom built laptop would be hassle-free? From what I understand is laptops are far more delicate than desktops and while you can totally custom-build a desktop, a laptop requires more testing for the interoperability of every part to make sure the parts work together and stable.

We weren't aware of this wiki page. I think it would be a bit pretentious to put our own machines in there; however, I suspect more blogs and forum reviews from our customers won't be far of.

You might be surprised. We have been shipping to the UK - it's typically between $50 and $80 per machine depending on the weight.

There's more on the wiki :

Maybe you should contact the laptop team.

I can recommend Zepto, not from personal experience but Ive read some good stuff about them. They dont ship Linux preinstalled but you can order them without XP if you want (atleast in Sweden) Not sure about http://fi.zepto.com/

Im not sure how they are priced in finland but here they are affordable.

Engnome - exactly my suggestion - I have a 2314W Zepto and it's great.
The prices in denmark are fine as well.

on some of the models you can even design your own cover (just thinking ubuntu logo on the lid of a laptop would be cool :D )

I have a zepto znote SL120 (tiny little thing) that's been running ubuntu since I bought it. So far not a single problem, everything has worked almost out of the box. :)

ugh I hate EmperorLinux :(

You could try http://www.widowpc.com/

They now have a non-gaming laptop which I guess is great... they have wonderful customer service and will gladly help you install Linux if you wish.
