I am looking for some statistics on Ubuntu users and I was wondering if anyone here could help. For example, I am looking for stats on these types of questions:
1. Demographic usage
2. Number of downloads
3. Total Number of Users (estimate of course)
etc.

Also, I am trying to find out more information about the Open Source Industry in general.

Anything would be appreciated.

Sorry to bump this guys, but how am I suppose to convince anyone about the greatness of Ubuntu if there isn't any stats available? Surely someone has a good source of information.

Literally, no one knows. You don't have to activate it or buy it or anything, just download, and the CD can be used in any computer. How would you quantify the number of users?

Wikipedia does this, by counting requests made by computers browsing the site, but even this is less than satisfactory.

Well certainly there has to be at least some market research done. Maybe not so much Ubuntu itself but the open source industry in general. I know most open source programs are not-for-profit and finding out information is pretty slim, but I was hoping there would be something available.

Well certainly there has to be at least some market research done.

Canonical estimates that ubuntu has around 12-13 million active users.

Maybe not so much Ubuntu itself but the open source industry in general.

Firefox? VLC? Chromium? OpenOffice? Blender? Android? Apache? Webkit? MySQL? Virtualbox?

There are no hard stats, and stats are generally pretty useless anyway, the point isn't to argumentum ad populum, it's about choice.

Depends what sort of information you're after.

Can just give them a cd or boot up your netbook and show them?

Please keep in mind that when people talk about market share, they are usually talking about the Desktop Market.

Linux is used the most in the Server market (Google and wikipedia uses Linux)

In the Web Server
Linux has a minimum of 64%,
Microsoft Windows has 33%,
BSD 2.4%....

In Super Computers:
Linux: 92.80%
Windows: 1%
Unix: 3.80%

From the Link Above: "Bear into mind tat Linux has *FAR* more desktop users than this shows. The studies and references are mostly based In America and other Affluent areas. Surveys and polls are rare and hard to do in impoverished nations. Yet Linux thrives there. It is free to all."
