It's called My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and yes it's a cartoon.

Now, I know most of your first thoughts are "that's a show for little girls, I'm a man, I would never watch it GRRRR!!!" as you take a swig of nuts and bolts out of a tin can.

That's what I first thought, but the thing is that it's actually a good cartoon with antics on par with classics such as Bugs Bunny. It also has a good voice cast, and animation. Also, it frequently has new songs in several episodes.

The show was created by Lauren Faust (Powerpuff Girls, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends), and her husband. Her goal was to make show with a target audience of young females, but without making it stupidly girly so that even their parents could enjoy it. She succeeded beyond expectations, and most of her audience are males in the 20-34 age group. I've become a fan of the show myself, and I figured some of you guys would enjoy it. Also, a lot of people recommend to at least watch the first four episodes before making a judgment.

I worked on this yesterday, I'll probably write up the README tonight, and reupload it for people who aren't sure on how to install it. Basically as root just extract the folders into /usr/share/backgrounds, and in Appearance (System -> Preferences -> Appearance) click on Add, go to the directory, click on the drop down menu on the bottom right that says 'images' and click all files, then click the .xml file. I have them set to cycle every 5 minutes, but in the README I'll describe how to change how long it takes for them to change.

Well I guess it's not technically new. The 20th episode aired today, and there's 6 episodes left of the first season, but it's still relatively new.

Sadly no, but like Tofu said it's up on youtube, and a lot of the episodes up are in HD, and there's even a torrent link for all of them in HD.

Also, Habro is fully aware of it, and they have no plans of going after the uploaders. The general consensus is that most of us are going to buy them once they're released on Blu-Ray/DVD because buying videos on iTunes is stupid.

Ok so I watched some of the first episode. I am not into cartoons anymore but it wasn't bad for a kids show. It is way better than that crap they have on nick now.

If you're going to watch just one episode, I recommend Episode 25. The first two aren't the greatest. Don't worry you won't need to know much in order to follow along.

I am so glad I am so resistant to the show's encroaching of your mind. No attempt at converting me has worked - no, it only made me hate it worse. I already have a severely negative relationship with the ponies - and it only gets worse each day. I've seen people attempt to convert me everywhere, be it Skype, Team Fortress 2 or the Internet in general.

On the Steam groups, &c., I'd go the other route there, Bibo; I don't think it's a thing for folks who still think of masculinity as a thing.

On the other hand, it got a shout-out of sorts on NPR's Wait Wait. See the Bluff the Listener bit here (http://www.npr.org/templates/rundowns/rundown.php?prgId=35&prgDate=06-18-2011).

Yeah, that's the wrong depiction, even Fox News did better (only slightly). The media seems to be attacking guys who watch the show lately without actually researching anything. It's one of the popular things right now.

Eh, I stopped caring what people thought of me back in high school.

Its not a new show.
My Little Pony is a brand of toy ponies marketed primarily to young women and children and produced by the toy manufacturer Hasbro.[1] These ponies can be identified by their colorful bodies and manes, and typically a unique symbol or series of symbols on one or both sides of their haunches. Accordingly, the ponies are named after the symbols on their haunches.

Following the related My Pretty Pony toy, introduced in 1981, My Little Pony was launched in 1983. The line became popular during the 80s. The original toy line ran from 1983 to 1995 (1992 in the U.S.) and inspired animated specials, including an animated feature length movie and three animated television series. The brand was relaunched between 1997 and 2003 (1999 in the U.S.), and then fully relaunched globally in 2003. My Little Pony celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2008.:D

Its not a new show.
True, if you're referring to earlier iterations of the franchise;

My Little Pony Friendship is Magic is an American animated television series that began airing on the United States cable channel, The Hub, in the last quarter of 2010. This incarnation of the Hasbro toy was developed for television by Lauren Faust, who had previously worked on the Cartoon Network series The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends with their creator, her husband Craig McCracken.

Very nice! I'm still (in no hurry) trying to customize the login screen -- actually I rarely see it since I just dm-crypt my home partition and log in automatically after unlocking it at boot. But I did manage to change the background of the GDM login screen to the same 1920x1080 "Derpian" image.

I damn well believe that resistance is NOT futile and I am out there to PROVE IT! In fact, I am living, walking, breathing proof that you CAN resist the pony influx myself! I watched it before and I got bored within twelve seconds. Within a minute I couldn't take it anymore. I need to customize grub, I see it all the time, and it looks hideous. I can't get it beyond the 640x480 res (same with splash screen, it happens after installing ati graphics drivers), but is it easy? You're resistant to accepting them fully, but yeah at least your opinion is justified. Some people like it, some people don't, but I don't get it when someone can form a strong opinion on something without giving it a chance (not directed at you, just people in general). You can reject giving something a chance, and logically you could only remain indifferent. There are some exceptions though.

Well, y'know. Under the circumstances, I've been shockingly nice... about the ponies. Surprise surprise, not anymore!

Why else would all my recent headlines on Steam have SOMETHING to do with hating ponies? Why do I feel so AMAZING after killing a brony in Team Fortress 2? I'll tell you why: I am strictly against the ponies, established shortly after I gave them a chance. They had their chance and they blew it. Quickly.

But I don't need to hate the ponies as much anymore, since I found something I have been looking for for a very, very long time. I still do hate them just fyi.

Regular Show is one weird show. Who is warped enough to come up with a character that is a guy with a bubble gum machine head?

Exactly why I wouldn't watch it , ~30 seconds of that rubbish very near scorched my brain a while back. TG for remotes...quickest channel change ever.

30s is not enough to judge that show. Along with the rest of the cartoons from that era, they were the kind of cartoons that were completely different to children and older people.

Having watched the first 4 episodes of My Little Pony, I've found it quite enjoyable, though it lacks the slightly cynical elements present in other cartoons that really draws me to them.

For me even less than that is enough. I know the style of cartoon I like and certain types (some even much older than them) used to annoy the daylights out of me. I mean no criticism of anyone who does watch such shows btw. Was mainly having a good laugh at and agreeing with KiwiNZ's reaction to the pony thread reviving :)

Along with the rest of the cartoons from that era, they were the kind of cartoons that were completely different to children and older people.... Yes I agree with that, I'm probably fairly much older than a lot of people here (at least by the sounds of things), yet certain styles of newer cartoons even appeal to me at times.

Just the ponies and the likes fall into the category of "Where's that <bleeeeep> remote gone !" And don't get me raving about those Pokemon thingies :p.

Each to there own I suppose ;). (Geez even Rastamouse has a bit of appeal to it)

You know what my days were like before the ponies? I just did what I liked: played games and edited videos. Nobody shoved ponies into my face. Or attempted to convert me to a brony. Or encouraged me to do something that ultimately led to a negative reaction. I just played games.

Until the bronies showed up. Those dangerous, pony-loving lunatics. While I was recollecting myself I realized that the best solution to a problem is usually the easiest. And I'll admit it, Bibo; we said a lot of things to each other that the both of us will probably regret later. And all this time I thought you were one of my enemies as you were a brony. Turns out you're actually one of my allies I guess. So you know what? You win. You somehow managed to help me drop my vendetta against the ponies and make me have to rethink myself within a week. Yeah, I guess the use of the word "cartoon" wasn't really accurate the way I used it. Because when I was thinking of cartoons I was thinking of "an animated show aimed towards children" but I guess anything that is animated is technically a cartoon. I need to customize grub, I see it all the time, and it looks hideous. I can't get it beyond the 640x480 res (same with splash screen, it happens after installing ati graphics drivers), but is it easy? Like on a scale on typing a few commands to writing a whole conky configuration where does the difficulty lie between?
It wasn't that difficult. I just had to add a line to /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme (with the path to the PNG file to be used) and then re-run update-grub2.

I commented out this line:

My goal was to make you no longer a hater, and I succeeded.

Bronyhood will come naturally.

I! AM NOT BECOMING! A BRONY!!!

But I believe we can put our sole conflicting interest aside for the rest of the week, because I would like to see the ending of Portal 2's co-op not just on YouTube (as the one video of the ending I found has no sound beyond the player using Windows Explorer for at least two minutes) and to see if you really did get better at Portal 2. Besides, we have all damn week to do so, as it turned out Friday was my last day due to me handing in the last of my schoolwork on Thursday.

I already said I tried it and it led to a severely negative reaction. I shall never watch it again.
Exactly my point (the tense in my post was just ambiguous). Not everyone likes it and that's fine by me, as long as there's no misjudging of people who do like it (and I haven't seen you go in that direction, but to your credit I haven't paid much attention to this thread).

What I mean by this: so far it's just been jibes from NPR and some Fox News coverage/commentary, some fair and some denigrating. I'd hate to see the day when some societal ill like child predation is chalked up to watching a kids' show.

Well having watched the show and uh... delved a bit into the communtiy a bit, it makes sense to me now. It's apparently the fastest growing and current number 1 meme on the internet. Also, there seems to be long running pony threads in a lot of other nerd forums.

Also, Linux is about sharing anyway ;)

Ya know, I'll give credit where credit is due - you did get me neutral again, Bibo. And even though I am warming up toward the bronies and in one case, defended a 13-year-old one from another 13-year-old brony who wouldn't shut up about BroNYcon (guess where that's being held) until I stepped in (besides, the brony I defended didn't want to spend $150 to go all the way to New York just to hang out with a bunch of 20 or 30-odd year old pony-loving freaks... he's only 13 FFS!) this does not mean I plan on joining the herd. I am still resistant to it, and a l w a y s w i l l b e.

Ok, I watched 11 episodes because of this thread. It's exactly what I would expect out of a show for little girls. While it seems to be fine for that audience, even above average, I'm having trouble seeing what adult men see in it. The pink horse is funny sometimes, but seriously, I'm a grown man, I need some depth to my comedy. Did I miss something here?

This brings up an interesting issue. I think part of it is the utter lack of decent children's cartoons. For me, since the days of Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's Lab, I can count the number of good cartoons running on one hand (well, two fingers). Something like MLP and Phineas and Ferb, really is a breath of fresh air.

Secondly, I'm not sure how old you are, but there is actually depth in MLP imo. There are a lot of nostalgic references (and some that I later learned about, cause I'm not old enough myself :P). In fact, in some ways, I'm reminded of scooby doo and bugs bunny, though I can't put my finger on it.

ninjaaron
July 27th, 2011, 11:46 PM
I'm not very old, really, just 26. I was never into Scoobie. Bugs is alright. I'm a sucker for slapstick and physical humor. That's probably why I like the pink horse. I also don't dig on nostalgia for the sake of nostalgia. I'm always inclined towards seeking out the best in new art, rather than getting stuck on the past.

CarpKing
July 29th, 2011, 12:00 AM
The show has some slapstick, but mostly I'd describe it as character-driven situational humor, where the plot is just a backdrop for interaction between unique characters. I think most fans' enjoyment comes from developing an attachment to the characters rather than seeing how the plots are resolved. It reminds me somewhat of the "slice of life" genre in anime (Azumanga Daioh, Lucky Star, etc), which is also known for being popular with older audiences despite being generally appropriate for younger ones.

Everyone has their opinion. However I am pretty darn sure Ponies is American so comparing it to Akira or labeling it anime due to perceived nationality is ridiculous. It is just an animated series same as any other.

What you are thinking of is perhaps stereotypical Japanese animation? Bright colours, sailor school uniforms and goofy situations? I am sorry but no. All forms of animation especially ones from Japan cover the whole range from bad or good, comedy, action, whatever.

Alright, I watched the whole first season since I'm trying to procrastinate on papers right now (quite successfully, I might add). They got better towards the end, as I expected they might. It was the same with the first season of Community, and the second season produced some of the best TV of 2010/2011 (albeit Community's lowest points are probably better than anything on MLPFiM).

But I still don't get what's special... but I do want to know what happens next season with the Cutie-mark Crusaders. Damn.

Meh.

If you want to see good children's TV that adults can watch too, check out H2O: Just Add Water.

For those who don't know, H2O is about three girls who become mermaids whenever they touch water; they also each have a superpower. One of their socially awkward male friends is a budding scientist and he tries to solve the mystery of why they've become this way. It's really a surprisingly good show with great storylines, decent special effects, and superb locations and scenery. Some of the premises in the show are pretty awesome too, drawing on mythology as well as modern environmental issues. The girls keep their abilities a secret but because they change into mermaids on the slightest touch of water, there's always a danger that someone will find out...

Surf The Channel had quite a few episodes the last time I checked, or you can try the torrents. Just be aware that Phoebe Tonkin can't act until later on in her career, so don't judge the show too harshly on that :-)

Brain dead movies can be quite good, even brilliant, despite themselves. It's self-serious crap like Avatar that immediately falls flat on its face. Your ponies could also be good despite itself, but my gut feeling is that, in the end, it's just about ponies and girls who like ponies.

From Wiktionary: (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wiktionary/en/wiki/rage#English)

rage (plural rages)
- Violent uncontrolled anger.
- A current fashion or fad.

The one Bibo is using is the former definition. Normally, I wouldn't defend a brony, but under the grounds that Bibo is a friend of mine I shall. And if you think that you can beat the both of us, then I shall tell you that we're still holding the cards, and they're all full houses. Make your move wisely, moim przyjacielem.

Again I'm not interested in watching the show. I'm interested in the fact that grown men walk through Toys R Us aisles supposedly looking for pony toys (as I just read) and then come home to talk about it on Youtube, 4chan, and perhaps UF.

What makes it even more interesting is that none of it seems to be sexual, which is usually the easiest way to explain strange affinities.
If you're legitimately curious, it's an island of savvy non-cynicism. It's everything that isn't sex and violence, and it's cute without being stupid. In a lot of ways, it does seem to be an expression of internet culture, at least of the "silly cat videos" variety; it's a self-aware series with some cleverness to it and an ability to disarm stereotypes without resorting to sarcasm. It's also very clever about making pop culture references without feeling like marketing or ridicule.

So, uh, who's looking forward to season 2?

Me. I check equestria daily.. daily now for news about it. As far as I can tell it begins running in December?

No, that's her assistant.

Lol. That's called an instance of the division of labor. In Horse-Land (Equestria) assistants are not horses but lizards. Horses fly around on rainbows, whereas lizards do what horses tell them to do. So much for the utopian effects of this show!

You seem to be thinking this too much.

They're colored miniature equines that can talk, and get into whacky adventures.

He's the only dragon in the show. One dragon being an assistant isn't exactly an established social pattern.

That Bibo or whatever the name of the horse is has a lizard as an assistant and not a horse says a lot about the status of lizards relative to horses in Equestria (not Sauria).

This is hardly new in animation. E.g. hyenas and lions in The Lion King.

It suggests nothing. Dragons are rather rare, and most of the ponies comment on never having seen one before. Aside from spike, they don't really have a status. Assistant isn't that bad a job anyway. It's not like he's a slave.

Applejack and her family run a farm. That's backbreaking work, and they don't seem to wealthy in doing so.

I know this from having seen two episodes and not liking the show enough to continue watching. The fact that Spike is a dragon as well as an assistant isn't some sort of racist metaphor, it's just Spike's job.

Well, seeing as there are 3 restaurants in Bikini Bottom, the Krusty Krab, the Chum Bucket, and that high-end place that people (fish) go on dates or something.

Also consider Krabbs' monopolistic behaviour toward his only competitor.

The six main ponies are
Twilight Sparkle (the brainy one, and Spike the dragon is her assistant)
Fluttershy
Pinkie Pie
Rainbow Dash
Rarity
Applejack

No one is named Bibo. Also, Spike sees her more as a mother figure probably.

Something along those lines was inevitable. Even in later episodes of season 1 the animators screwed up her eyes as a shout-out to the older fans' meme. I just hope they don't overdo it.

Okay so I've never posted here before, and of all the posts I decide to reply to this is the one :o

First off thank you for introducing me to this show. I LOVE IT! I'm telling everyone I'm a brony now :p I want a tshirt! I just wish I'd learned about it sooner when I could have picked up a mcd's happy meal.

That said, did anyone else have a bit of a problem with Feeling Pinkie Keen? Obviously we have magical unicorns and flying pegasi and dragons and whatnot, but there's never any explanation given for Pinkie Pie's special powers of prediction. I could accept this if it weren't for the fact that Twilight spends the whole episode trying to find a scientific explanation. In the end, she's the one in the wrong and the moral of the story is "just accept it and live with it, there's things we can't explain." It's not entirely bad but I didn't feel this was a good message to send kids.

Besides that I'm in love with this show.

Thanks again!

P.S. Anyone know where I can get a shirt or better yet, a plushy?

I don't think that's the real message there, though; it was more about Twilight trusting that her friends might know something she didn't, and Twilight denying the evidence in front of her wasn't particularly scientific, anyway. = )

And then there's "Bridle Gossip," where she does accept the superstitious explanation and is still wrong. = P

Now, if you don't mind, back to this, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDI9Cy9tghk#) because I'm not a brony and know that there are better things to waste my time with than bowing down to a cartoon pony :lolflag:

There's a neat series of PVCs that have been released blind-bagged outside of North America, and they're more in the style of the cartoon than the regular toyline, but they're irritatingly poorly represented in the US. There's a pack of four that leaves out Applejack and Fluttershy (!) that's been released here but is hard to find, and there's a gift set of the six plus some random recolors that hasn't been released yet. No Celestia, Luna, or any of the minor characters.

There's some good Pony news and chatter at the Allspark (http://www.allspark.com/forums/index.php?showforum=67) Pony forum. A little saner than most of the Pony fora available.

I'm not against tattoos or anything. I've got a couple myself, in fact. However, I think it makes the most sense to get tattoos of something you think you might still be excited about 50 years from now.
