Hello everyone,

I want to try Ubuntu so i got a Live CD and trying to Install Ubuntu. I am using Windows 7. I have 5 partitions. My 5th partition is completely free and this is where i want to Install Ubuntu which has about 60 GB space.
After booting from CD, when I click on install Ubuntu, instead of partition it shows devices and the devices are divided not like partitions. All the used space are grouped into one and unused space are grouped in one which is about 246 GB. I dont want to install on that 246 GB space. Is it possible to use only that 60GB space that i have reserved for Ubuntu.
I tried formatting that 60 GB to ext4, still it doesnt show while installing.

Regards,
Sandeep

a) What did you use to partition the hard drive?

b) How did you partition the hard drive?

Welcome to UF,

Too add to Sef's questions,
Load the cd, and select "Try Ubuntu" to make sure it will work to your satisfaction on your hardware. Then open Gparted & take a screenshot of your hdd partitions. Attach that pic to your next post using the paper clip in the toolbar when you post.

By what you've said, I believe that the large partition you're referring to is an extended partition. That's no problem, we just need to get a look at it.

Take a look at my thread.

I too was having problems figuring out partitions for a Dual-Boot of Win7 and Ubuntu 10.10.

There are a bunch of links to various sites that will help big time in this matter.
