View Full Version : Firefox 4 Drops March 22..... What does that mean for us?

Well, as many of us must know by now, Firefox 4.0 officially drops on March 22nd. Some of us have been following the firefox beta using ppa since its creation, but many of us are still using the firefox 3.6.15 which is currently in our repos.
When this newest firefox drops it will be many generations better in speed, quality, and features than firefox 3.6.15, and in modern design.
So here's the question I'm die'ing to know. Will the Ubuntu repo's be updated to firefox 4.0, or will they keep the current 3.6 branch? I'm on Lucid, but Maverack users are also on the 3.6 branch. Will we see the upgrade, or will we all need a ppa? Does anyone know an official repo for stable firefox releases?

Unless you enable a PPA, the official repos will NOT change. This is one of the things promised by Canonical. Any software included during release will NOT change except in the cases of security updates. No, FF 4 does not count as a security update.
ETA: a stable FF PPA does not exist, however, after the FF 4 release, I would be stunned if someone did not start one for all the Lucid and Maverick users out there...

Thanks for answering my concerns. So I will need a ppa. Ok, I'll wait for a lucid ppa like you suggested on release day.
Also in response to the user suggesting I use chromium, I'm already using chrome as a stop-gap solution until firefox 4 drops, but when it does, I'm switching back over.
I think there will be ALOT of ex-firefox users switching back to the fox on this release. Which is a good thing. :D

You can't use a package that uses a previous version on a newer version. It spits an error; and a hefty workaround is needed to use old packages.

Currently using the RC1 from .tar and it's pretty sweet, but I've found one bug. When left idle for about 5-10 minutes, drop-down menus start disappearing on contact. I've reported this and I got a reply stating that it's already been reported.
I've been hearing that RC1 will basically end up being the final, however, I'm hoping that this small bug will be fixed by then....

If you want to upgrade to FF4 without updating your whole operating system and every package on your machine then the best thing to do is download FF4 from their website. You can install it into your home folder or anywhere else you want.
Imagine if the outcry there would be if Microsoft chose your software versions for you.

Um... What?
At each Ubuntu release the versions of the installed software as set in stone, and are only updated to the latest *security* update, and NEVER major releases.
From a business point of view, there is nothing more you could ask for (except maybe a gui for LDAP like in OpenSUSE ;))

My biggest question is will the scrolling be fixed?
I've had a scrolling problem with every browser except Opera, and I can't seem to fix it with add-ons. Basically when I scroll the wheel really fast and let go, it just keeps going and going. I don't know if it's because of Compiz, or something, but it's annoying.

I don't think they're trying to "follow" chrome. To be honest, I hope they do what Chrome is doing in the sense of not making a big deal of versions; rather, making a big deal of features. That may be the only thing I like about chrome, I don't like it as a browser at all.

I think a faster release cycle would be beneficial for Firefox. While four versions a year may seem extreme, especially given Mozilla's current release pace, upgrading Firefox at least twice a year would be essential to stay current. Firefox 3.6 was released on January 21st, 2010, 14 moths ago, and that can only compare to the release cycle of IE, but none of the other browsers.

How to update ff to 4 in ubuntu 10.4 and 10.10:
Firefox Stable PPA provides the latest Firefox stable builds for Ubuntu 9.10, 10.04 and 10.10.
This is a Firefox stable PPA repository that will provide the latest Firefox 4.0 stable. As of writing the repo does not yet contain the debs (If you add it right now, you'll get a 404 error in Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10).
Add the PPA using these commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
sudo apt-get update
Then if you have Firefox installed, you should get an update for the latest Firefox 4 when it will be released (the package name shouldn't be named "firefox-4.0" like it is now in the Mozilla Daily PPA but simply "firefox").

On Windows:
-Go to the website
-Download the exe
-Double click the exe
-Everything installs easily
Or when Mozilla is ready Firefox will automatically update itself
On Linux:
-Go to Ubuntu forums to find out how to install the thing
-Find out there are many different ways to install it
-Try to work out which way is best for you... what version of Ubuntu do you have etc?
-Upgrade your whole OS
or
-Download and manually extract the files, manually make shortcuts for the binaries
or
-compile from source
More choice, but too complicated for the average computer user

If you want to install FF4 run the script from this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1708905
If the script complains about downloading the file manually download it and then rerun the script from the same place where the download is located.
http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/4.0rc2/ pick 32 or 64 bit followed by your locale language. When the final release is ready you can just update it.

Yes, it is half baked. Really they should have released a .deb that you can double click and easily install/update the package. Some appications providers do this, but most don't. On other platforms like Windows and OSX it is the other way round. Most apps have easy to use installers. That helps those operating systems appear more user friendly.
This is not a fault of Ubuntu, it's more of a vendor fault. Lucikly there is getdeb.
Why do app devlopers not want to make debs? There are not many good tools for creating them. Also, there are too many Linux platforms to cater for. Not many progammers want to waste their time producing a separate installer for each one. (fragmentation)

Whyis everyone freaking out? If you want the newest Firefox 4 release NOW, it's not a problem. Mozilla has a stable release PPA which of course has the newest Firefox 4 in it. Just add the ppa and update like this:
open Ubuntu Software Center
Go to Edit -> Software Sources
Go to "Other Software" and click "Add"
Type the following line (and then click "Add Source" and "Close"):
ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stableNow wait like 5 seconds for Software Center to update your repositories. Then open Update Manager and the update should show up.
Big bonus is: you will always get the newest Firefox stable release this way. You won't have to do anything anymore. No downloads, installs, nothing. It will update automatically from now on.

I was upgraded by mozilla to rc2 the other day which I understand is the same as final. I had some issues with the disappearing menu yesterday (rc2) and figured it was a compiz problem, so I ran without compiz and it was perfect. Now, the funny part, I restarted compiz this morning and ... yup ... it's been running fine as well. I have no idea, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Hmm... quite interesting. I just installed the Final via the PPA because I figured I could live with it thanks to your Min/Restore tip. I'll have to try that out and see what happens. Thanks for the update! ^.^d

Any news about Canonical releasing it for lucid or lucid-backports?
Firefox 3.6 went into hardy as a "normal" update so Firefox 4 should go to lucid at some point... or not?
