Is this possible? How?

I'm referring to the right upper-hand notifications (e.g when someone types on Pidgin or a DropBox mesage)

Tray icons are included with the icon set that you are using . It is possible to replace the icon images in the usr/share/icon folder in the file system or the .icons folder in hidden/home .If mean the notification bubble its self , I don't know if that is possible.

If you really mean the "notification bubbles" (Notify-OSD) and you also want to modify its position on the screen, see my earlier post:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10115367

It refers to this article: http://maketecheasier.com/easily-customize-notifyosd-ubuntu-lucid/2010/05/26

Greetings.

Are you referring to the icon in the panel?
My Tweetdeck icon (in the top panel) has a very annoying white field around itself :)

Yes , in fact there are indicator applet icon sets @Gnome look .org . I have not tried any of them yet because I'm happy with the ones included with the icon set I have installed.
