EDIT: Since I figured no-one would bother, here are the new 'guidelines'.Just post your top 5 and fav genre on top. Or if theres such a topic already, guide me to it!

I was gifted an iPod on my birthday. I don't know why on earth would she gift me that, as my entire collection of music is 32 songs. Yeah, that's it. But now that I have one, I guess it's right time to expand my collection. To make it easy for everyone, just follow these steps.
1. Select top 25 songs from your collection.
2. Remove those that you don't think people can listen to at night to sleep (So most variations of metal are out)
3. If it's not by a band, remove it.
4. If it's rap, remove it.
5. If it's got funny lyrics or excessive love, remove it. I need songs with great lyrics.
6. If it's emo, remove it.
7. If the singer has a bad voice (like ACDC's), remove it!
8. If there's those awful exotic sounds (like in Radiohead and Linkin Park's new album), remove it!
9. Post your list.

And please follow those steps, no matter how great you think Airplanes II might be.

Oh, and thankyou!

If you can't bother that much, here's some general info about my taste. I like Linkin Park, Sum 41, Green Day, U2, Colplay. I particularly love voice like Chester's. I hate voices like of the singer of ACDC (whoever he is) and I hate well, Bryan Adams's like voice too. I am a sucker for great guitar portions!

Well have fun listening to Michael Buble. Personally I think if it's not Power Metal it's not worth listening to.

Try using Last FM (http://last.fm). Asking other people for music recommendations isn't going to help at all, because everyone has different tastes, y'know? I'm more of a hiphop and hardcore punk person, which obvious indicates some sort of bipolar disorder since nobody else seems to like both. :P

Note: You don't need to scrobble or even sign up to get recommendations.

... and here i was, going to recommend In Flames...

PS: AC/DC's singer is Brian Johnson, the "Brit Banshee" as i like to call him :P) he has a brilliant voice, IMHO.

Hard one as most of my music collection would likely fail on one or more of those but..

Chuck Berry (not a band but come on - it's Chuck fricking Berry)
James Brown (has a backing band, that counts)
Mark Knopfler (if you insist on the band thing, go Dire Straits)
Mr. Big

Sorry most of my collection has strayed into the world genre or otherwise would offend your musical tastes.

Yeah your tastes are different than mine. I generally listen to music like The Acacia Strain...really heavy, gritty, music. If you really like breakdowns then heavier music will generally have them.

All the bands below generally have good guitar parts.

August Burns Red
Atreyu
Bullet For My Valentine
Becoming the Archetype
Close Your Eyes
Oh, Sleeper
Our Last Night

All those band above are metalcore (heavy)

Bring Me the Horizon
Suicide Silence
Thy Art is Murder
Pulling Teeth

All these bands are deathcore (even heavier, Like gritty gutteral screams that take some time to acquire an ear to listen to)

Oh and you can generally look all these bands up on Youtube :)

Most of the best bands talk nothing of the sort, listen to Stratovarius for example there is nothing fantasy about it.

Massive Attack
Cat Power
Cassandra Wilson (specially, "Harvest Moon")
Morphine
Portishead
P. J. Harvey
Porcupine Tree (not exactly what I would listen to sleep, but they're great and have some soft songs, if it's what you're looking for)
Bourbon Princess
Pink Floyd

I know there are other great interpreters I'm missing, but I can't remember now, and I can't take a look at my collection since I'm at work. :)

I have listened to Stratovarious. My experience has been that there is very little power metal that isn't cheesy in some way. You can't deny that fantasy lyrics are very common.

I agree.
I used to listen to a few power metal from time to time. But 90% of the songs have some kind of "epic" theme. It gets tiring.

Cheers

i see your Stratovarius and i raise you a Rhapsody, a Blind Guardian, a Helloween and a Hammerfall... most power metal bands do have an epic/mythological//folksy feel to the lyrics, bands like Stratovarius/ are the exception, not the rule, IMO.

Wintersun is not really power metal. They're more along the melodic death metal line of things.

Not really hate, but I find most power metal to be very dull. The only power metal band I'll really listen to is Blind Guardian. Yes, they're cheesy as well, but I think there style strays a little from the rest and I like a lot of their material, especially the earlier speed-metally kind of stuff.

Power Metal is awesome. Below are mixtures of power and progressive music that is generally on the softer side and quite nice to listen to, some of these bands are really interesting and have wide ranges of style. It's probably not what you would associate with metal either, it's far more musical and the singing is probably the best you're going to get out of anything short of listening to nice music by people like Celine Dion and Andre Bocelli (If you find the right songs)

Sonata Arctica (Broken, Tallulah, Last Drop Falls)
Opeth (Hessian Peel, Hex Omega)
Dream Theater (Scenes from a Memory album is worth listening to in order)
Pain of Salvation (Iter Impius, Second Love, Dryad of the Woods, Sleeping under the Stars)
Nightwish (Sleeping Sun, Walking in the Air, The Siren, Gesthamene)
Domine (Ride of the Valkries)
A Perfect Circle (Pet, The Nurse who loved me)
Symphony X (Candlelight Fantasia, Death of Balance/Lacrymosa)
Nevermore (The heart collector)
Sabaton (Primo Victoria, Gallipoli)
Anathema (Feel, Don't look too far)
Katatonia (Sulphur)
Blind Guardian (Nightfall)

You should also try
Pink Floyd (Lost for words, High Hopes, The Wall)
Metallica (Hero of the Day, Unforgiven 1 and 2, Mama said, Tuesday's gone)
Megadeth (Of Mice and Men, A Tout Le Mond)
Muse (Knights of Cydonia, Plug in Baby)
Apocalyptica - they play metal with cellos.

And if you ever do want to get in to heavier / weirder / rockier stuff try

Dimmu Borgir (You probably won't like this)
Marillion
In Flames
Killswitch Engage
Meshuggah
King Crimson
Kalmah
Children of Bodom
Tiamat
Godsmack
Evergrey
