Hi,
Are you trying to play mp3's, wav's, wmv's, avi's etc but not getting any playback sound? You might only need to install some extra codecs. Most codec needs can be met by installing the package named "kubuntu-restricted-extras" (or ubuntu-restricted-extras). It is possible to install both packages if you like. You can install these by going to your Kmenu (startmenu) > Applications > System > kpackagekit ("Software Management"); then search for the above packages.

If you are not getting any sound at all:
By default, Ubuntu and other *ubuntus have a default sound level that is too quiet for most people to hear. So click on the sound icon by your clock to raise the sound level, and make sure it is not muted, if you haven't done so already.

If you have already done that and the sound still doesn't work, here is another good link for troubleshooting sound problems:

Hope this helps

Not really, the link I provided was Kubuntu specific. To be honest, I meant to link that one also. It's usually the first one I mention, but apparently I forgot to put it in there. ;)
