Hey guys, I have a post about how to make Ubuntu mimic Unity, note this guide wont tell how to clone Unity but rather give a starting point to further tweaking. http://tekkidd.tumblr.com/post/3780049772/make-ubuntu-10-04-and-10-10-look-like-unity

Why not just install Unity?

Its not currently stable, at least the compiz version. And the other one that shipped with Ubuntu 10.10 UNR was clunky

There's an up-to-date 2D version available that uses Metacity instead of Compiz:

PPA here (https://launchpad.net/~unity-2d-team/+archive/unity-2d-daily)

I'm more interested in making the Classic Gnome desktop work like Unity but retain some customizability in appearance. DockbarX is a big part of that, although I'd also suggest Avant Window Navigator (mainly to offer an overhanging system panel in the corner that blends with the title bar for maximized windows, but also to get rid of the Gnome Panel entirely.) WebUpD8 recently ran a piece on using xdotool and a simple Launcher to trigger Compiz actions like Expo from a button.

AWN would work and when i was experimenting i tried using everything from Docky to Cairo dock however i found that because DockBarX is tied into the gnome panel its more integrated and therefore better suited for the job

Oh, really? Intriguing. What does DBX do with Gnome Panel that it doesn't do in AWN? I've only ever used it as an AWN applet.

The only thing missing from DockbarX when runned as an AWN plugin is the handle menu. That means that you can't reach the about dialog, you can't reload DockbarX and you must access the preference window some other way. Besides that there should be no differences, unless there's some bugs in the AWN applet I've missed.
