If this has been addressed elsewhere, my apologies, and would you please give me the URL. Thank you.

Just created dual-boot (WinXP/Ubuntu 10.10) on old Microtel 1.6G, 1.5G RAM. In Ubuntu, there's no login sound.

Steps tried so far:
1. Experiment with System -> Preferences -> Sound (extensively). No luck.
2. User (which is autologin) has permission to use sound devices (System -> Admin -> Users and Groups), also has Play Login sound checked
3. alsamixer - made sure pcm was on
4. cat /proc/asound/cards shows MB sound: SiS SI7012 with CMI9761A+ at irq 18.
5. no .asoundrc* anywhere to be found.
6. aplay -l shows card 0: [SiS card], device 0: Intel ICH
7. lsmod |grep snd =
snd_intel8x0 25664 2
snd_ac97_codec 99227 1 snd_intel8x0
ac97_bus 1014 1 snd_ac97_codec
snd_pcm 71475 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec
snd_seq 47174 0
snd_timer 19067 2 snd_pcm,snd_seq
snd_seq_device 5744 1 snd_seq
snd 49038 10 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_seq,snd_ti mer,snd_seq_device
soundcore 880 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 7120 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm

(note: this is after I blacklisted midi items)

8. desktop-login.ogg plays fine in Mplayer.
9. reinstalled canberra-gtk-play, sound files play when cursor placed over them.
10. created new startup item using canberra-gtk-play. tried with and without unchecking GNOME login sound in startup applications. nothing.

I must be missing something but I'll be darned if I can figure out what. :(

Sidebar question: Is there a way to create a Restart and/or Shutdown sound?

Thanks.

EDIT: Tried turning off autologin. no difference. Wiped & installed 10.04LTS. Same result. I'm lost.....

Solved. Wiped & reinstalled this morning, noticed some pulse audio packages in updates, now all works well.
