I want to resurrect this old thread, because I want to install the text freetype filter in my gimp 2.6.8 in ubuntu lucid lynx as the poster indicates:
The only thing I'm really missing from my Windows is my GIMP FreeType Plug-In. I agree that the GIMP text tool has improved vastly, but I found the FreeType Plug-In to be so useful. Is there any way I can acquire and install it?

First I would like to find the source code of this text freetype filter since the link adviced here
http://photocomix-resources.devianta...etype-73916757
the plugin is on this page.. is for windows, no for linux.

Then, as it can seems that I have to compile the source code, I would be very gratefull if someone gives the specific steps to do it (step by step please, I have never compiled any source software in ubuntu yet).

Thankyou very much in advance

Hi claracc,

Since you've resurrected a thread from 2009, the thing to keep in mind is that Gimp has developed tremendously since then. Here's a tutorial (http://www.gimp.org/unix/fonts.html) on how to install fonts in Gimp.

Here are some other resources that might be useful (though not necessarily font related): Free Gimp plugins (http://www.techzilo.com/gimp-plugins/) and here's Gimpology (http://gimpology.com/) (which I like a lot)

I've been using Gimp for several years now (though there's always something new to learn), starting on Windows, then moving to Ubuntu, and have never once had to compile anything.

Fonts were a more challenging part of using Gimp on Linux in earlier years, but still always workable. These days it's much nicer. It actually took me a long time to like The Gimp, but just this last year it's really become impressive.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Thank you for answering Jay Car.

Yes I know that gimp 2.6.8 uses better the fonts and the effects over the text than previous versions, so I have concluded that I won't install this freetype text plugin. I will try filter effects over text by other means.

Also I have read that this plugin is very old (2004) and no longer mantained.

Thanks for the links to the free gimp plugins

Do not resurrect old threads. Instead start a new one and provide a link to the old one, like this (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8407850#post8407850).

Hy i am the same PhotoComix, i stumbled upon this topic almost casually i was googling for the freetype source code i lost on a dead HD, found now ( thank to Internet Archives the page was dead )i will add the link is ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/plug-ins/v2.0/freetype/gimp-freetype-0.6.tar.gz I am going to compile for my self (yes i use Ubuntu too )

-...the thing to keep in mind is that Gimp has developed tremendously since then. ... I've been using Gimp for several years now (though there's always something new to learn), starting on Windows, then moving to Ubuntu, and have never once had to compile anything. just the opposite here i start using linux years ago mostly because make easy what in windows is a nightmare, compile from source

what you wrote is correct in general...you may use linux and even gimp without never have to compile...but..well...you may also use Ubuntu as was £Windows without never touch the command line

but if you like to play with new plugin without wait ages for official Ubuntu packadges ( much of what in the official repository, here i speak only about gimp plugin are old version...as example the Gimp Animation Packadge aka GAP is not even old is totally obsolete and will not work well with gimp 2.6. ..at least was so last time i checked) .. in this cases you have to compile

Then, as it can seems that I have to compile the source code, I would be very gratefull if someone gives the specific steps to do it (step by step please, I have never compiled any source software in ubuntu yet).Ubuntu as default miss most of what needed to compile, anyway all that needed be installedpainlessy with Synaptic and in the Ubuntu doc there are good step by step guide to compile

Since i was looking for the code to compile for myself, i may try to make something that may be shared
(not a commitment but i may try)

anyway don't hold your breath may take some days, and is better you contact me on www.gimpchat.com (http://www.gimpchat.com) because i may well forgot to monitor this page

So if you are in hurry try yourself, will be useful also to install other new edgy plugin, or as in this case to resurrect old plugins and sw that still rock
Or post some remainder on gimpchat (where BTW most of member use linux )

best regard
