View Full Version : [all variants] How to perform a smart/partial upgrade?

March 9th, 2011, 04:01 PM

Along the years I've customized my Ubuntu installation, removing many unused packages and substituting some for others I prefer.

In my desktop computer when I upgrade the distribution the Update Manager just upgrades the currently installed packages.

However that doesn't happen in my laptop. When I try to upgrade from lucid to maverick it asks me to install a bunch of new packages that correspond to the ubuntu-desktop bundle. How can I avoid this and just upgrade the packages currently installed?

The only way I can think of is to edit the sources.list file and substitute lucid for maverick in the repositories. Though I believe that might corrupt my system.

I haven't found any way to enable this feature and I wonder how my desktop does this by default.

Any help would be much appreciated as I would avoid removing all the unwanted packages again.
