kdenlive is very good for manipulation many filters too it is in the repository applications/ubuntu software center

for conversions handbrake is brilliant will also turn a dvd to a video format

you install it this way from terminal

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:stebbins/handbrake-releases

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install handbrake

then applications/sound and video to find it

Been using Kdenlive for a while now (and I do have a proper license for recent Adobe Premieres), been rather pleased with it. It's much more intuitive too and probably suits most non-hardcores better. Never really used AfterEffects, though - like to keep it simple (stupid).

Gotta try that OpenShot too, now that the previous poster mentioned it. Cheers.
