Hi, I am too cheap to buy a microphone, so I am trying to get some headphones to work as a microphone. Frankly, I don't even know if a legit microphone would work for me at this point, because theoretically headphones should work exactly as a mic.

Anyway, I cannot record from the headphones. I open Sound Recorder to try to record sound, and no input level is detected when I speak. I have unchecked the mute boxes in alsamixer for all of the mics and lines.

My sound card is an NVidia ALC883

When I open sound preferences and go to input, there are no options under devices for sound input.

HELP???

Headphones might work as a mic, but they won't produce voltage/amperage the sound card needs.

You can buy a working mic for a couple of bucks.
