Mark Shuttleworth has just named the next Ubuntu release, Oneiric Ocelot. Thoughts? More on his blog (http://www.markshuttleworth.com/).

No not a deer, an Ocelot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocelot).

I kid, I kid.

They should avoid the cat names since Apple already uses them. Is "T" going to be "... Tiger"?

I mean, there are other critters including Otters, Ospreys and Ostriches even! The thing was, these animal names helped make Ubuntu fun, and not taking themselves too seriously!

It shows "conformity" rather than "innovation". They seem to be becoming more and more like the Pigs in Animal Farm!

First release name I've had to go to the dictionary:

oneiric
adj : of or relating to or suggestive of dreams

Let's hope this is not a bad one (dream)

Megaptera
March 7th, 2011, 09:08 PM
I had to Google it ...

Oneirology (from Greek oneiros, "dream"; and -λογία) is the scientific study of dreams.

Ocelot: nocturnal wildcat of Central America and South America having a dark-spotted buff-brown coat

Hmm. Bit odd to choose something people are going to struggle to pronounce.

Er, actually wait, he called the distro Ubuntu. Disregard my last.

Silliest name thus far :/

...because naming conventions are totally necessary, and just calling it by the version number is so hard.

I've never looked more forward to the Latin Alphabet running out.

We're more than halfway there, folks! Only 24 more months left!

After Z, I strongly suspect we'll just be going back to A. SABDFL even refers to a 13-year cycle in his blogpost.

Who cares, it's just a development code name. The distro release is called "Ubuntu Linux 11.10".

I don't think you understand the seriousness involved in giving arbitrary names to software releases.

Ocelot isn't too bad to pronounce, although there could be interpretations, but "oneiric"? yikes! talk about a tongue twister.

I would call it omnipotent ostrich. Or maybe oily octopus. Opulent oak silkworm moth. Offensive orangutan.

Yeah. We never did get A-C. Didn't it start with Warty and then Dapper? And are they going to redo W? (If they do, I hope someone can come up with someone better than "Warty Warthog" Haha)

So I decided to look up Oneiric on Bing (aka Microsoft's search engine) and found this:

I have a feeling Techrights is gonna write me a complaint email due to me associating Microsoft with a free software project, even if it includes Mono apps :lolflag:

Along with that, the related searches are:

Well... as long as it brings in the developers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8To-6VIJZRE) they'll do it, right...?

Why do you believe oneiric is hard to pronounce? It's Oh-nee-Rick, quite simple.

Because it's such an obscure word that people have never heard before, and a slightly unusual progression of letters in English. I think English speakers will struggle a bit with the ei. Is it oh-NEE-ric? oh-NAY-ric? Oh-nee-I-ric? SABDFL should have done this as a video to clear it up.

I consider myself to have a reasonably good vocabulary, and it's a new one to me.

According to Google, there was a rumour of an ocelot-related codename way back in January. As for me, I'm just remembering the joke about oscillating and ocelots :-)

9/10 people have never seen the word "Oneiric". Who actually listens to crits?

How is anyone going to know how to even pronounce it without being told how to?

I didn't know until ~5 posts ago when it was spelled out "Oh-Nee-Rick".

Ok, so it's Oh-NY-ric. I can pretty much guarantee people are going to pronounce that wrong.

I've heard worse though. Who was the fool who chose Hardy Heron, when it should clearly have been called Hungry Hippo? ;)

i actually like the random names, mainly because i'm not really up on my animal names, so when i find out what the next version of ubuntu is called, i'll look it up!

It's always a learning experience and hey, isn't that what linux is largely about?

Ha ha, that's funny. Nice one. Good to see such humour among the forum staff. Hey, how did you discover that the word oneiric exists...wryly obscure! Should really fox the foreigners, eh? :p
Hope MS doesn't mind being blamed.

Ok, so what is the real name going to be?

I would go with the Pangolin, but that might confuse some people since there's already the Pangolin Performance laptop from System76.

I'd be ok with peregrine, puma, python, porcupine, praying mantis, pelican or piranha. All I really know is that it better not be a damn penguin, panda, or pomeranian though. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/images/smilies/lol.gif

How about Planomaniacal Prawn? :)

Which leads us neatly to the Oneiric Ocelot.

I honestly thought this was a joke. What is MS on?
Instead, he should be on a marketing course.

Disconnected, self-indulgent thinking.
Stop this now. Good leadership is knowing when you have made a blunder and correcting it.

Obnoxious Ostrich would make my day.

Always liked ocelots though, graceful creatures. As a curious kid I was able to find out that they may be as tame as a regular household cat if raised appropriately since cubhood.

Maybe Peekabooing Platypus next?
