I know this topic is probably very common as I found many threads about it trying to solve the problem, but everyone seemed to have a slightly different situation from me and nothing they suggested worked for me.

So I'm running Ubuntu 10.10, 64-bit(although I have a dual-core 32-bit processor), installed with wubi. It is on a Dell Inspiron 1520 with a GeForce 8600M GT. I was just playing around with the new install and clicked "normal" visual effects and I get the "The Composite extension is not available" message.

The first thing I found was to edit the xorg.conf file to include

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection at the end. I did this and it didn't help. Here is my entire xorg.conf file:

I don't know if its significant at all, but here are a few other details that might be useful to someone trying to understand my problem. I'm using a dual-screen setup (CRT hooked up to my laptop) in the "separate X screen" configuration with Xinerama enabled. When I run the system test application and do video testing the first thing it says is:

This display is using the following resolution:

Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
RandR extension missing
ERROR: xrandr -q should return a single line with '*'

Is this acceptable for your display?
I figure this may be related since its also an extension that seems to be related to video.

This is all the information I can think to provide at the moment, but will happily retrieve additional information you think would help. Thanks for your efforts!
